Dr. Deepak Chopra: I am Deepak Chopra. It’s my great pleasure to have a conversation with Congressman Tim Ryan, who represents the state of Ohio, has done so for six terms, and he’s now going in for reelection for his seventh term, right?

Congressman Tim Ryan: Yeah, that’s right.

Dr. Deepak Chopra: Okay. He has an amazing book which is called, A Mindful Nation: How a Simple Practice Can Help Us Reduce Stress, Improve Performance, and Recapture the American Spirit. So, tell me a little bit about the history of your mindfulness passion.

Congressman Tim Ryan: Well, I trace it back to growing up Catholic; lots of family members praying the rosary. I remember my football coaches in high school actually going in and out of the chapel as we were changing classes. They would sneak in and get some quiet time in prayer and meditation. My grandparents had rosaries that they prayed quietly in their own home; not in public to make a production out of it, but quietly. And then, I flirted with all different types. I think I listened to Seven Spiritual Laws of Success a million and a half times driving back and forth to law school in New Hampshire from Ohio, and, you know, a lot of Wayne Dyer’s work, and then just on and on.
