Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati
OMTIMES: What is the most rewarding part of your work—your “dharma”—aside from hanging out with high profile celebrities and heads of state?
Sadhvi Bhagawati Sarasvati: The most rewarding part, I think, is feeling so at home: in my life, in my work, in my body, and in my days. There is this beautiful congruence and flow between all areas. The most wonderful aspect of it is that my only real “job” is to be fully present to whatever the person or situation in front of me requires.
During the course of a day, my work could include anything and everything from putting a band-aid on a wound, to giving lectures, to leading satsang, to writing articles and books, to preparing absolutely inane paperwork that’s required of NGOs, to basic administrative tasks. The ego loves to grasp hold of an identity and decide, “Oh, I bandage wounds, therefore I’m a nurse;” or, “Oh, I give lectures and satsangs, therefore I’m a spiritual teacher;” or, “Oh I do work that trained monkeys could do, therefore I’m a clerk.” My goal is not to let my ego latch onto any title but to be present in each moment. So my work becomes this wonderfully constantly changing experience of simply trying to stay fully present in each moment to see what this moment wants from me: sometimes it’s a lecture or satsang, or a meditation class, or an answer to a spiritual question; sometimes it’s just a band-aid, or a hot cup of tea, or admission for a child into one of our schools, or a computer center to be opened in a village.
OMTIMES: Can you share about some of the amazing global charity projects you’re working on with the United Nations?
Sadhvi Bhagawati Sarasvati: We have so many programs going on that every day it seems we’re building a new website! In brief, we run a whole spectrum of programs including free schools, women’s vocational training and upliftment programs, orphanages/gurukuls, free medical care camps (and a free clinic), animal care programs (primarily cows but expanding day by day), and so much more.
