Lucy Liu: One Outstanding Humanitarian
Deepak Chopra: Well, it was quite a movie to see. –I mean, in many ways portraying the worst that can happen in human degradation.
Lucy Liu: It’s true. I think the wonderful thing about the story is that it’s about courage, and it’s about bravery. It’s about breaking that fear, because this woman, who was this child that was sold in the brothel, had two children while there. She managed to escape and go to the police. But, the police were involved with the prostitution ring and with the brothel, and receiving money and favors. So, she wasn’t given any help by them. She ended up going out outside of the police, the local police, and going to the national police, and coming back and actually saving her children. This story is about her daughter being saved, who was also brought into the brothel, having been born there and brought into the brothel as a prostitute, as well, at a very young age.
Deepak Chopra: I recommend the movie for anyone who’s interested in knowing what’s happening in the world, and the extreme injustice of this slave trade. You’ve actually explored this subject outside of this particular context, and it’s all over, right? It’s everywhere in the world.
Lucy Liu: It’s everywhere in the world. It’s in the United States, as well. It’s very prevalent. It’s something that people don’t talk about. I think, when you put it [this girl’s situation] in a film format and see what actually happens in that case, it becomes a lot more real. I think people talk about it, and it seems like an unbelievable story. It’s something that you talk about for a few minutes over lunch or dinner. But, it [child sexual slavery] is not something that really impacts you. When you see [in the film] what happens to a young girl who’s not even ten, it really changes how you react to something like that and how you want to get involved.
