Divine Intervention and the Gift
by Paul Lipton
Accepting guardian angels becomes our personal choice. It is a question of faith. Do we believe in something more? We can either be open to the angels’ presence or lock ourselves up and feel so alone. From my personal experience, I remember when I was first informed of my mom’s cancer diagnosis. I thought the cancer might change her view of angels, although she had complete faith in her guardian angel; instead her faith grew stronger.
We all face challenges in our lives. Whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, it is at those moments when the dark clouds are forming that our faith is tested. Do we shut down or open up? The guardian angels point the way to our stronger selves. They assist us in tapping into our better qualities.
Haven’t you wondered where that burst of strength comes from when you feel all spent or used up? Haven’t you pondered how you can see the glimmer of light, which keeps getting brighter; yet others appear to be drawn into the darkness?
My mom never faltered in her belief that her guardian angel was always beside her as she slowly faded from the cancer that finally took her at the young age of 52. She always said that we never walked alone. I remember that she always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eyes. It was as if she knew the truth that an invisible world was alive and well all around her at all times.
To her, the invisible world was as tangible as the table and chairs in the dining room.
We can either see the world filled with goodness, humor, decency, understanding, and angels or let the darkness overwhelm us. We have a choice. We can choose to believe, see, and feel that which is all around us – visible or not – or live myopically. We can either live with blinders on; only experiencing the obvious, or we can choose to live in a more magical, hopeful world.
When my dad unexpectedly died from a heart attack at the age of 56, my mom said that her one true love was joining the angels to watch over her in her passage. About a year after my dad died, my mom passed away. Her last words were of gratitude for the life she was given; self-perceived flaws and all. We are given the chance to tell a heroic story. She chose to tell her story with flair, joy, and peace. I have to believe her guardian angel had a hand in her philosophy.
It is so easy to slip into despair at those moments in life when the proverbial rain clouds roll in. During those times, it is then when we must have faith to know the angels’ watchful eyes are there. It is so comforting to feel their presence.
After I had major surgery for trigeminal neuralgia, it was not a surprise to me when the doctor answered my question regarding how the surgery went with a comment that made me smile.
Reflecting on that experience, I remember seeing my wife, my children and the doctor who performed the surgery in the intensive care recovery area of the hospital as I slowly came out of the anesthesia. I recall looking up and asking if we were good. He smiled, and conveyed, “You are good.” Then, he quickly added, “but there was Divine intervention.” I smiled back at him and said “I always knew my guardian angels were watching over me.” He indicated that, as the surgery was progressing, the doctors and nurses were basically re-sheathing the 5th cranial nerve but part of the damaged nerve was hiding behind the brain stem. Previously not showing on any pre-surgery test, the nerve showed itself to the doctors as they were getting ready to exit the surgery area. How did this happen? Why did this happen? Regardless, this ordinary moment turned into an extraordinary and wondrous experience.
Was it Divine intervention? Was this a gift? I invite you to believe. I encourage you to look up and welcome the angels into your life: to accept both the visible and invisible world that is all around us. We just need to live in a state of grace and acceptance. Life has its challenges. Life has its proverbial highs and lows; yet throughout it all, you don’t walk alone. Open your heart and soul. They are waiting to come in and walk with you in your unfolding journey.
