Sweeping Changes Ahead

A few days ago, a writing notion came to me that I entitled, “It’s Taken This Long.” The idea was to outline our long, shared journey and provide a snapshot of where we stand on a number of areas, such as education, health, energy, and environment. Disheartened, the title changed to, “This is NOT the World We Need.” Things turned rather depressing, since so many of us are all living these realities. It would not be anything we did not already know. We might agree that we are overdue for a bit of spring cleaning.

Hence, it changed yet again to its current and newest title. Sweeping changes are what we need, really. Considering the fact that we are all here for a reason at this particular time, there is the definite possibility that we will see, and many of us may very well cause, sweeping changes to transpire. As mentioned above, there is no “one” thing that must be fixed, there are many. From systems like education, energy, and health, to the smaller choices, like the type of diet we eat and mindful words we emit from our mouths, we are, in fact, making sweeping changes take place.

We surely do need a clean slate in many ways, and it all starts in the recesses and corners of our minds. Beginning with the possibilities that we “can” do better and hold ourselves to a higher standard, follows the mindful and empathic actions that we know must occur. Change is where spirit and hope live; it is what makes the seemingly impossible possible. Gone are the doubts when we are actively engaged in manifesting a new reality.

In fact, there may not be any doubt in many of our minds right now that sweeping change is, in fact, necessary. As more of us live with the realities of extremism, it is reasonable to think that nature itself will encourage us to promote a way that is wholly and inclusively different. Differences themselves are embraced today, maybe as never before, as more of us recognize how we mesh and exist in this wonderful, cosmic tapestry.

We may even be getting a little comfortable with the fact that our sweeping changes are not very crystalized yet. Our mist of wonderment can be felt by many of us, who may awaken from nebulous dreams, and maybe even live in a painfully foggy atmosphere related to growth and change. It is not with laser-sharp focus that new options are formed; rather, through the soupy mess of fermentation and refinement.

Through large actions come small steps forward; by small steps forward we will embody large, sweeping changes. We have much of the dysfunction of the past few decades to thank for bringing us to this point of recognizing that so many ‘great’ systems and fortunes are, inherently, bankrupt and no longer serviceable. As hard as it is and has been for many of us to bear, the homelessness, helplessness, and destruction is the fodder for rebirth.

So many of us want to know what the future will bring or what it will look like. Sure, some of us may not be very comfortable with the unknown. Can we be happy in the moment and enjoy the process of change, knowing that what comes will no longer be what is?

I rather like the airy feeling that comes with sweeping. It is a cleaning action I actually enjoy doing every day. A good broom can get rid of the smallest pieces of dirt, yet is a natural enough process that does not require much more than the energy of will to accomplish. To think that a ‘sweeping change’ might come organically (!) is another clue or bit of positivity we might choose to grasp.

Sweeping is an action that can happen fairly quietly, too. Without loud motors or suction to carry away the debris, we must be mindful of where we place our refuse after we sweep it up. No, it does not go under the rug to hide; much of the litter bits can be returned to the dear earth to be recycled in yet another natural process.

The more we might contemplate the idea of ‘sweeping changes,’ the more we each may choose to take up our brooms, as either a form of solidarity or protest in getting rid of the rubbish, and to mark the efforts that can be made by the humblest among us. There are no sharp edges to a broom, but there are a lot of prickly bristles. Brooms are very effective implements, and historically represent a happy, healthy home, which is the least we all deserve.

A fresh, clean change can begin with the first push of the broom, which is something just about any of us can do. Working in a natural way, together, sounds very appealing, in fact. Almost as much as working apart in synthetic or contrived ways might also have its certain appeal.

So, dash on out to the store for a broom, or make your own from scratch using natural parts; it is totally up to you how you choose to celebrate the many sweeping changes we are seeing in the world today. They ARE changing, thank goodness, and we are here to help sweep away the bits that have polluted and dirtied our tiny blue planet, in our own little corner, of the vast Milky Way.
