Everyday Things for Spiritual Growth

by Sherri Cortland, ND

According to my Guide Group, one of the most important things we can do to expedite our spiritual growth is to live in the here and now. Why? Because when we are in the moment and truly paying attention to what we’re doing, we will make better choices, which will, in turn, allow us to move forward faster and with less drama and pain.

Here are six actions that we can incorporate into our lives to help us remain firmly in the present and expedite our spiritual growth:

6 Everyday Things We Can Do to Expedite our Spiritual Growth

Spiritual Growth Tip #1 – Choose your Company Wisely for Spiritual Growth

One of the best ways to stay focused in the here and now is to hang out with positive people – people who are determined to make the most of each day, folks who wouldn’t entertain the thought of stepping foot on Poor Me Avenue and those who are not stuck in the past continually reliving unpleasant events. Negative vibrations are insidious, and they seemingly multiply faster than positive vibrations! So, spend as much time as you can with positive people and get up and walk away when Debbie Downer tries to infect you.

Spiritual Growth Tip #2 – Practice Mindfulness for Spiritual Growth

Another way to stay in the moment and be present is to really focus on what you’re doing. In Buddhist meditation practices, mindfulness, which is also translated as awareness, is considered to be of great importance on the path to enlightenment. Establishing and maintaining mindfulness in one’s day-to-day life means maintaining a calm awareness of one’s body, feelings, thoughts and perceptions. In other words, it involves being present in the moment and paying attention to our senses and how we feel at any given moment.

Spiritual Growth Tip #3 – Smile for Spiritual Growth

Another way to be in the moment is to smile. Smiling creates endorphins in our bodies and makes us feel happy. When we smile at someone, we are focusing our attention and awareness on them, while at the same time participating in an action that elevates our own mood, too. Here are some smiling tips that will help us focus, become more aware of our feelings, and raise our vibrations all at the same time:

~ Smile with your eyes as well as your mouth, and you’ll really feel the joy.

~ Smile when you wake up in the morning and you’ll set a tone for appreciation and awareness that will last all day long.

~ Smile and be mindful of how it makes you feel.

~ Smile and be mindful of the reaction of the person or persons you just smiled at.

Spiritual Growth Tip #4 – Practice Random Acts of Kindness for Spiritual Growth

Another thing we can do to be present and live in the moment is to practice random acts of kindness. My Guide, Gilbert, shared the following on this subject:

Practice Random Acts of Kindness. Doing so will create an immense outpouring of positive energy into the atmosphere. During a random act of kindness, no one is thinking about the past or the future, they are having an exchange that is firmly in the present and has their attention focused on the present. This is a great thing because so many have a hard time living in the moment, living in the present. With an act of kindness, you are a lighthouse emanating positive energy – you create a positive field around you and the person you are in contact with. This positive energy continues to emanate around you and positively affects others that you come into contact with, creating a domino effect. So, random acts of kindness – seeing things that need to be done to help people, to help animals, to help the planet, and then acting on what you perceive, well, that’s a dynamic way to increase vibrational levels.

Random acts of kindness pack a double vibrational punch – they allow us to be firmly in the moment while allowing us to raise our vibrations.

Spiritual Growth Tip #5 – Take Care of Mother Earth for Spiritual Growth

As we pick up litter, recycle, and take any action that helps planet Earth, we can focus on what we’re doing, the effect it’s having, and how it makes us feel to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem. Taking action to help our planet keeps us in the here and now and raises our vibrations.

Spiritual Growth Tip #6 – Pay Attention to our Thoughts and Words for Spiritual Growth

To say the right thing at the right time, we must be focused. When we focus on our thoughts and words, we also decrease any negative energy that would have been created by saying the wrong thing or saying the right thing in a snarky way. We will also increase positive energy by saying nice things to each other if we’re sincere.

While working with my Guide, Gilbert, on this article, an interesting trend developed: The things that help us raise our vibrations are also things that help us stay in the moment. What also became clear is that we, as individuals, and most certainly collectively, yield a tremendous amount of power to effect change – and it all starts with learning to live in the moment. As Gilbert says, “It takes courage and determination to make changes in one’s life. Taking action is always more difficult than standing still and waiting for things to happen.” Every single one of us possesses the courage and determination needed to be present, live in moment, and take charge of our thoughts and words.
