Piloting Basics
The ancient Hermetic texts tell us that there are universal laws or principles that apply to everything in our Universe. One of these laws is the Law of Cycles, also known as the Principle of Rhythm. The Kybalion states that “everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.”
Evidence of this law can easily be seen in nature. We see it in the changing of the seasons and in the tides of the oceans. We see it in the cycle of life, death and rebirth; in nations and governments as they rise and fall; in bodily functions, such as heart rate, breathing, digestion and menstruations. All things exist between opposite poles of vibration (positive and negative) and swing between those poles. We experience ups and downs. Things come and they go. The Law of Cycles maintains balance within the Universe. This principle or rhythm helps us to explain changes in our moods, feelings and experiences.
Until we understand the Law of Cycles, we are left feeling helpless and at the mercy of the Universe as the pendulum of life swings back and forth between poles. We can be left feeling like we have no control over our thoughts, emotions or life circumstances. Once we understand the Law of Cycles, we can make conscious choices to help neutralize the effects of the pendulum swings on ourselves. We realize we can choose to ride along the crest of the waves without needing to go down into the deep valleys.
Piloting Directions
How do we do this? The Kybalion states that one must “polarize himself at the desired pole and by a process akin to refusing to participate in the backward swing or if you prefer a denial of its influence over him, he stands firm in his polarized position and allows the mental pendulum to swing back along the unconscious plane.” In other words, we may make a mental choice to believe that bad does not necessarily follow good or that great highs are not necessarily followed by deep lows. Refuse to buy into the ‘waiting for the next shoe to drop’ or ‘things are going too good, something is going to go wrong’ mentality. The principle of rhythm tells us that we will experience changes and fluctuations in life. However, it does not say that these changes must be negative and positive. It simply states that things change and fluctuate. We can control the degree to which we experience the effects of the pendulum’s swing by using a simple technique.
Imagine you are a pilot flying a plane through life. There are smooth sunny stretches and storms ahead in your travel path. Look at the plane’s control panel. It has levers that slide up and down for each area of your life: finances, health, love, relationships, career, etc. As the pilot you have the power to adjust these levers. For each area, you can choose the altitude at which you want to fly. Adjust the levers in each area and lock them in at the level or altitude that is most comfortable for you. How high do you want to fly? Do you want to adjust the altitude so that you are high above all the storms in your path and experience no bumps? Well, you might miss some of the good things you could experience during the sunny times because you are too high. Would you like to fly a little lower so you can still see and experience the world but just glide over the storms with some minor bumps in your ride? Or, do you choose to leave some of the levels low, flying at an altitude that takes the storms head on, bouncing you up and down like you are on a rollercoaster? It is your choice. You get to choose your altitude in each area of life. Once you have adjusted each lever, lock it there so it cannot be moved accidentally. Mentally check these levers daily, and if they have shifted, readjust them. If you don’t like the level you set previously, adjust it. It is your plane. You fly it. Each day use your mental control panel checks to set your intention for how you choose to fly through the day. This is one technique you can use to take control of life’s natural cycles and rhythms – life’s ups and downs.
Piloting Experience
Make the decision each day to refuse to participate in the pendulum’s backward swings. Rise above life’s challenges and let them pass beneath you. I encourage you to give this strategy a try over the next month and see what happens. You will be surprised to see how much lighter you feel. Enjoy the process. Have fun and have a great flight!
