Creating a Spiritual Compass

We live in a world that is always telling us what to do and how to do it. This is very disempowering as it leaves us to look outside ourselves for the answers, and it keeps us vulnerable to the whim of the collective consciousness. This extrinsic and outcome focused way of being removes us from the present moment experience. It can leave us feeling like we are not enough, so we create an idea of what we think ‘enoughness’ looks like and use that as our measurement for success. Moving from a place of lack does not give us a sense of direction or provide long-term motivation. So, how do we create a better, more enduring experience? A life filled with clarity and purpose? First, we get clear on our intention, focus on the experience we want to have and then take steps in alignment with those desires. This is how we create our spiritual compass and our way to success.

Making a Spiritual Commitment

This is your intention. Think of intention as the ultimate ideal you want to exemplify in your life. For example, gratefulness or well-being. If you have a tendency to overeat, maybe it is temperance or moderation in thought and action that you desire. This intention is the calibration of your spiritual compass. The reason it should be simplified down into a single word or short phrase it that gives you a direction. This is your spiritual north. When we make our intention too complicated, it can make it hard for us to stick with it. It should be the big picture, soul-level desire that can be summed up in a single word or a simple phrase. Intentions are not detail driven because they don’t have to be. It is through this intention that you create an energetic agreement with the universe. It is how you raise your vibration to meet that of your desire.

What is the experience you want to have?

These are how you form your goals. We often hear about SMART goals – specific, measureable, action oriented, realistic and timely. These are outcome driven desires; instead, they should be experience or learning based. This is the essence of mindful living. What is the experience you want to have? A good way to figure out your goals is to ask yourself, what does my intention have to offer me? Then, design goals that help you to learn, grow and discover who you are in alignment with your spiritual north. For example, if your intention is temperance, then ask yourself why do I want the experience of temperance? In this, you may realize that your goal is to learn to trust yourself and have the feeling of being in balance. If your intention is gratefulness, maybe your goal is the experience of being in service of another or the feeling of selflessness.

How do you get that experience?

These are the physical actions or the action steps you take to have the experience that is in alignment with your goals and intention. This is when you get down to the real details. This is the “How” of the equation. These actions steps should be small acts of personal power that you can follow through on. If temperance is your intention and your goal is the experience of self-trust, then maybe your action step is to go for a short walk after dinner. Action steps allow the expression of your intention. Every time we follow through on an action step, we build personal power. This power allows us to transmute and transcend behaviors and circumstances. It is the power of now. Start with thinking about three of the easiest ways you can change your behavior in alignment with your goals and intention. This is the final step in the creation of your spiritual compass.

Why create a spiritual compass?

The short answer is – life happens. It is easier to stick to something when life is predictable and static, but how often does that occur? Our lives are dynamic and while there is much habit and predictability to our actions, the situations differ. That is why we need a spiritual compass to navigate our lives when things take us off course.

When you focus on the outcomes and the actions rather than the experience, it is so much easier to fall into the all or none mentality. It also makes it harder to adapt to situations when life sends you interruptions. Continuing the previous example, what happens when you have a work dinner and you won’t be able to go for a walk? If you keep an eye on your intention of temperance, then you can still have the experience of self-trust when you order the salad or healthy bowl of soup instead of the burger and fries. In every situation, when your action steps aren’t available to you, ask yourself how you can still be in alignment with your intention. This keeps you on course.

So, when you wake up in the morning, hold your intention in your heart space. Breathe it in and through your body. Raise your vibration to it, knowing that the details don’t matter. Then, as you mindfully move through your day, create experiences that are congruent with that intention even if you aren’t able to carry out your preferred action steps. Remember, you can’t cheat on a lifestyle change. This is big picture, soul level stuff. If your goals are learning focused over outcome focused, when life happens and things break down, you can just observe the situation. Say, “Now that was interesting, what can I learn from this?” Then, think of options to experience your intention in another way.

Taking the time to write out and create your spiritual compass helps you to cultivate mindfulness and purpose and leads to positive, enduring changes no matter what life throws at you.
