DALAI LAMA: Encouraging a Compassionate World
THE DALAI LAMA: My own sort of experience…different kind of a meditation. But one most effective is analytical meditation. That means analyze. Analyze personally your own mind, yourself, your being and then body. You see, nothing exists by objectivity. That very similar. Very similar that sort of that Buddhist sort of unique concept. You see, nothing independently exist.
LARRY KING: So you don’t think about things? Do you think about politics? Do you think about China? Do you think about India? Do you, when you are meditating, what are you — what are you thinking’?
THE DALAI LAMA: Well, I carry my sort of daily meditation, I should not think these things. So only it’s a deeper level.
LARRY KING: Deeper than that?
THE DALAI LAMA: But then about China, about India, or these things, which are in some sort of direct relation to the Tibet problem. Then that…now since 2011, I totally now retired from political responsibility. Not only I retired but also, you see, four century old tradition. Dalai Lama institution automatically become head of both temple and spirituality. Now, that formally, proudly, voluntarily ended. So now no political sort of responsibility. My main now responsibility as a Tibetan is the preservation of Tibetan culture. Culture of peace, culture of compassion. That I really feel is worthwhile to preserve.
LARRY KING: So who’s dealing with the political?
THE DALAI LAMA: We already have elected a political leadership
LARRY KING: In Tibet?
THE DALAI LAMA: No. In exile
LARRY KING: Here? In exile?
THE DALAI LAMA: Of course — once— if we have the opportunity of a reunion, then I would prefer democratic system, through election. But then it must depend on the Chinese central government. So I don’t know.
LARRY KING: When you see terrible events, when you see a man shoot up a church in South Carolina, don’t you question your faith? Don’t you question your own compassion and stuff, that people would do this to people?
THE DALAI LAMA: That actually confirm us. We need more effort to make awareness the value of compassion. Compassion of others’ wellbeing and respect others’ life. When you have that sort of conviction, impossible to bully other, to cheating other, to killing another.
