Personal Evolution: What does it mean to you?

If you are reading this, it’s likely that you are a constant improver. A person who spends a lot of time and effort making sure that your work is the best it can be, and a high-achiever dedicated to your development. At the same time, you may tend to worry about personal evolution, your performance, and how others perceive you.

The Meaning of Personal Evolution

People talk about evolving, but don’t really define what it means to do so. Personal evolution is a change of perspective and a maturation as well as a shifting view of yourself in the world and your role in the world and in your life. It is finding ways to adapt to life and to improve the way you handle relationships and situations. To evolve means deepening self-awareness and constant improvement of your skills and natural abilities. It is the ability to create your life in accordance with your unique vision. It is the discovery of the self and what you believe and how it serves you.

How your beliefs, self-image and self-knowledge affect you emotionally, mentally and spiritually is determined by testing new knowledge through experience and turning it into wisdom. Armed with this perspective, the judgment of others fades into the background, confusion dissipates and your path becomes clear.

The Process of Personal Evolution

Your reactions evolve over time. Your beliefs and perspectives evolve with each experience as you seek to validate what you already believe while possibly discovering that it is time to see things differently. You may start out seeking evidence that supports the existing framework/perspective, only to discover that the current construct of life no longer fits for your evolving sense of self.

If you do not feel ready for the next phase in the evolutionary process, rather than adapting and changing, you dig in and resist the shift. Fear of what will happen next, how your relationships may change, how your satisfaction with your current life may be altered, and not knowing what to do in response to the changes prevent forward movement. Recognize that personal evolution is a process of change and becoming. You go through cycles, like the moon, starting in the dark, gradually brightening through enlightenment, reaching fulfillment in one aspect of your life and being excited about it, before the effect begins to wane, and it is time to select a new goal or quest.

As a constant improver, you have probably been through this process many times. Your view of yourself and your place in the world have shifted over time as you seek to find your core self, that part of you that persists in all circumstances and relationships.

Shifting on the Path of Personal Evolution

Personal evolution is about achieving self-trust in the context of having the self-confidence to face change with excitement, wisdom, and the willingness to modify your underlying beliefs when appropriate.

In the quest for constant improvement, identifying the patterns of your personal cycles and process and then working with instead of against them makes life easier, as you then function in accordance with your true nature. A sense of peace and flow replaces stagnation, agitation and self-deprecation.

Rather than experiencing anxiety over not meeting the expectations of others, you set your own expectations for yourself in living up to your potential in accordance with your natural gifts. Evolving in this way allows you to cultivate self-acceptance rather than beating yourself up for not being what others thought you should be. This false sense of the ideal self is the root of fear and anxiety. The limited perspective that held you back is banished, and an opening takes its place offering you a willingness to see yourself and the world in a different way.

Exercise to Assist with this Process

Journal about how your role and self-image have changed over time. Then, create a vision without limitations of how you truly want to live your life. You will know that this new vision is in accordance with your true nature when it fosters a deep sense of peace, while enabling you to breathe deeply and smile easily.

In the End (and there really is no end to personal evolution)

Your natural inclination toward continuous improvement makes you well-positioned to achieve your goals and a true sense of self. There will always be opportunities to learn and grow. Ultimately, those with this tendency look forward to the next bit of knowledge, the deeper journey into the self, and the sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing yourself and living in alignment with your true nature.
