Judy van Niekerk: Forgiveness=Success
Forgiveness is so close to my heart because essentially that is what I did with my father. After my father was sentenced to 54 years in prison, four years later, I got a phone call that said he had been transferred to a hospice and was dying of cancer. I just knew in my heart I had to go and see him. At the time, I had no idea what I was going to say, but I can say it was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, but I can also say it was the greatest gift I have also been given. To be able to go to see him to tell him that I loved him, to tell him that I am grateful, to tell him it is okay, it was as if literally angels had come and taken tons of weight off my body. It was just incredible. . I don’t condone what he did. All I could do was let go of the chain that was connecting us, with love and compassion.

Shawne Duperon: Any last words of empowerment?
Judy van Niekerk: The greatest realization that I had was that only I can change my life, only I can impact my life, only I can heal myself. I cannot ever rely on outside people, society, and life, anything outside of myself to fix me, to heal me, to help me. I have to take responsibility to do it myself. When I realized that, I stopped lashing out at the world, and I started taking responsibility. I went inwards. You know what? You will be amazed at the depth of ability that you have to do whatever it is in your heart to do when you take that responsibility and that ownership that no matter what has happened in your life, you have it inside of you to heal yourself.
