Diane Wing: Tales of the Unexpected
OMTIMES: Do you believe we need a personal guru or a coach to develop our internal spiritual gifts or can we do it on our own, with a self-paced program?
Diane Wing: Both approaches have merit, and the individual needs to determine which option will help them most effectively reach their goals. The coach is important to help us see our blind spots. Most times, we are too close to the situation to clearly and objectively see the issues and patterns and move past them. The right practitioner can assist by assigning exercises and bringing forth insights that would take quite a long time to achieve on our own. The choice of a coach, practitioner, or teacher is a very personal one. It’s important to go into the selection process with awareness of what your needs are and how various practitioners may or may not be able to assist you. For example, the clients who benefit from working with me are ready to see things differently and to truly evolve and change at a core level. I ask the tough questions that lead to peeling back the layers and allowing hidden issues to come to the surface so they can be dealt with. This is hard work and necessary to experience significant change.
The ultimate goal is to be able to self-assess and function with calm certainty on their own. While effective, my approach is not for everyone. If choosing to go the path of entering into a coaching relationship, make sure you’re ready to invest yourself in the process. Be open and have the mindset that you have chosen this modality to reach specific goals that were difficult to achieve on your own. When selecting a coach, get a sense as to whether or not the practitioner has their own act together and if you feel good about their energy. Remember, the interaction is an energy exchange. Receiving coaching from someone who is struggling with the same issues you are is counterproductive. If you’re looking to commiserate, seek out a friend in a similar position and save your money.
If you are serious about learning how to overcome obstacles, achieve your goals, and understand yourself better, then find a practitioner with expertise in the areas you are seeking to improve. For those who prefer self-paced, independent learning, I’m translating all live classes into self-study courses that can be accessed from any device. These courses are multi-media that have audio, video, and text within each course, as well as exercises to help apply the concepts and to shift perspective. There will also be a private discussion group associated with each class so students can connect to others traveling a similar path. The instructor will also be available to answer questions online.
