Everyone has his burden. What counts is how you carry it. ~ Merle Miller

We all carry this baggage – the bulky set of beliefs that gets so heavy that we need a cargo truck to carry them! If your beliefs are bringing you joy, by all means, believe more of them! However, if they’re weighing you down, blocking your way, or limiting your options, then you should read this…

Our B.S. (Belief System) is a bundle of fears, desires, beliefs and behaviors that are built on impressions created out of our experiences over years and lifetimes. Samskara is a Sanskrit word that means a ‘mental impression,’ which is a building block of the Karma theory.

Have you ever noticed how you make footprints on the sand when you walk on the beach, but they almost instantly disappear when the ocean rushes over them? But if you made your footprints on a wet cement path, no amount of washing away would wipe away the impressions once they harden. This is how our belief systems are formed.

Every thought, intention, experience and action leaves a psychological imprint on our subconscious mind. They are the building blocks of how future circumstances and experiences are created for us. So, what may look like limiting circumstances that we’re dropped into are actually circumstances that we created. Our thoughts and beliefs have that much power!

How do you tackle that loaded B.S. (Belief System)? Here are some tips to assist you:

1. Lighten the load by weighing each belief

Awareness is key to seeing that our fears, judgments and limitations are BS. When you become aware of a belief that’s blocking your path to peace and purpose, weigh it to see how heavy it is, why it weighs you down, and where it’s blocking you.

Every choice, decision and belief that feels heavy in your heart is a candidate for this method. This process of Atma-Vichara (Self-Analysis) from all angles will help you see where your beliefs are holding you back. Journaling is a great tool for this process. Psychotherapy is another, depending on how deep and crippling your old B.S. (Belief System) might be. This can be a long, drawn out path to peace of mind, but for certain deeply wounding beliefs, this may be a necessary way out.

2. Transform your B.S. (Belief System) into Black Gold

When you realize that your beliefs, just like your thoughts and emotions, are simply a form of energy, you will realize that you can always change the nature of that energy. Upadhi, in Sanskrit, is your paradigm of limiting beliefs that becomes an invisible boundary.

By changing your thoughts, you can change your energy and your beliefs, which will shift your paradigm and open up your boundaries.

The key to making this method work is consistency. By constantly reiterating a new belief to yourself, you will change your paradigm. You will overcome your limiting perceptions, blocking fears, and habitual behaviors that are not serving your purpose.

3. Dump the load by dropping the B.S. (Belief System)

The third and easiest way to dropping the B.S. (Belief System) is to let go of it. As Lao Tsu famously said, “Only when we let go of who we are, can we become who we might be.” The more your life is cluttered with beliefs that are holding you back, beliefs that are not serving your purpose and beliefs that are draining your energy levels, the more they weigh you down.

How to drop the B.S. (Belief System)? By turning your back on it. By refusing to give it time or space. By turning your face forward to possibility and potential. By following your joy. To fly your way to freedom. As Socrates said, “The secret to change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”

Stepping Stones to Freedom

Overcoming our stumbling blocks, beliefs and boundaries is the first step to freedom. Although the only way to achieve ultimate freedom from our minds is to not create any impressions at all, a goal not to create a belief system at all is almost impossible while we’re humans living in this society. Learning to lighten our load of B.S. (Belief System) and then to tread lightly, so that we don’t create more B.S. (Belief System) is the first step toward our dreams and desires. It’s the first step toward peace, presence and purpose.
