Caroline Myss: Challenges of a Spiritually Conscient Person
Caroline Myss: From what I know, and I know very little–I know very, very little. But, from what I understand, [inaudible], their intervention has been to stop the nuclear experiments from massive nuclear destruction. They will not–they have stopped that because there have been apparently very dangerous nuclear–we nuke ourselves. What kind of people do that? What kind of species nukes its own planet? What kind of stupid creature nukes and renders its own planet useless? Sylvia Henderson: So, can you talk a little bit about the importance of prayer because I think that that’s a great way help us to get into actually living our talk?
Caroline Myss: Well, I think at the end of the day, Sylvia, every thought is a prayer. What is not a prayer? You know, when I am–, I think people–I’m not sure what most people think prayers are. But, I know that I’ve been asked, “Do you have any prayers that work,” as if it’s some kind of magic or something. But, prayer–every thought is a prayer, and if you just go about thinking that through the door of the body, mind, spirit teachings that, you know, your attitudes have influence–well, if your attitudes have influence, then you have to take then that another step. And I would say to you, “Why do you think your attitudes have influence? What are you basing that on?” Well, the answer for most people is, “Well, there’s energy.” “What kind of energy? What are you talking about?” “Well, the energy in my thoughts.” Well, energy is a word that people like to toss around in their work with healing and all the other [inaudible]. But, I have to tell you that if you deal with the word energy, you obviously have a sense that there is a life force. And if you are dealing with a life force, you are tampering with the idea that something created that life force. If you’re at the level of working with energy, you are not at the level of the sacred. And I will tell you that dealing with energy will not heal anything. It’s not possible. It’s not possible. You may help someone feel better, but you will never, ever–and never is a big word, and I choose it consciously, you will–deliberately–you will never heal anything. Healing requires grace, and it’s not until you are involved in prayer, until you are partnering with something holy and sacred, until you take your shoes off on sacred ground, and you position yourself where you realizing I did not create myself, that this holy universe did not just happen out of a big bang. That is a nice idea, but it’s a bit preposterous–that there is some conscious holy system that knows me by name. I don’t know how that is true–but that the universe, the nature of the divine is essentially law and order. This is a universe set up in mystical laws. And the law has no religion. The divine has no religion. There is no such thing as a religion of the cosmos, which is why I have no religion. There is no such thing. Everything is run by law and order, everything. Every thought has a consequence; every planet has an orbit. You can count on laws. And there are mystical laws. There are the laws of creation. And prayer is what bonds you in an intimate way, in an essentially impersonal universe. This is an impersonal universe. You jump off a–no matter who jumps, the law of gravity will bring us down. But a prayer, in prayer–a miracle is when God bends these laws just for you–so, in ways you will never understand. And it is not for you to understand. You don’t count that way. You are not due an explanation. There’s nothing special about you that the universe owes you an explanation. It is simply your position to trust that it’s so, that somehow or other within–the power of prayer is a sufficient amount of prayer–power that God knows you by name. And these laws can be bent and in such a way that a course of an illness can be changed, that the laws can be maneuvered for you because your faith and your devotion, to however it is this benevolence is set up, is simultaneously completely impersonal and completely personal. And the way prayer works is that you are held accountable for everything you set in motion. So, a prayer is not something that–where you can say, “Please clean up my mess. Please make things easy on me. Please get me out of this.” No, that’s not how it works. That’s a child. That’s a spoiled brat praying. No force of heaven is going to make things easier, guarantee your success, or show you what–the outcome of anything. It’s–learn what is possible, learn how life is set up. It’s not set up that way. How prayer works is, “Guide me, so that I do not fall into my negativity and make a foolish choice. Give me the courage, the fortitude not–to follow what I know is the right thing to do.” This is how you pray. “Hover over me, God. Do not let me make–help me not to make foolish choices or make choices that harm others.” This is how you pray.
