James Martin: Seven Last Words
Victor Fuhrman: Your latest book, Seven Last Words: An Invitation to a Deeper Friendship with Jesus, takes a deep and profound look at the final expressions and words that Jesus shared from the cross. How did you come to write this?
James Martin: Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, asked me to preach the “Seven Last Words” service on Good Friday last year. As I was writing out the meditations on Jesus’s last words on the Cross, I started to think, “This might make a nice little book of meditations.” I’m really happy that it’s out there now.
Victor Fuhrman: What message would you like readers to take away from Seven Last Words?
James Martin: That Jesus’s sufferings on Good Friday—physical, emotional and even spiritual—are a reminder of his humanity. That is, he suffered as we did. And so he understands us. As a result, when you pray, you are praying to someone who understands you not simply because he is God and knows all things, but because he is human and experienced all these things. The underlying message of the book is that Jesus understands you. And that can radically change your spiritual life.

James Martin: A book on prayer called, not surprisingly, “How to Pray.” Pray for me as I write it!
