SOLD the Movie: Behind the Scenes
Christopher Buck: Jeffrey, how difficult was it for you on a personal level to make this film?
Jeffrey Dean Brown: I think everyone that was in the film, at various times really kind of broke down. We were seeing very young kids. Jane and I probably saw 2,000 kids who had been trafficked. When you bear witness to that kind of thing, it changes you. I mean, you have to work not to be angry and sad. You have to keep doing your own work to stay strong in the faith of this. Both Jane and I, we’ve grown tremendously as humans, but we’ve had to go through and wrestle demons that came up because of it.
Christopher Buck: I could believe that.
Jeffrey Dean Brown: Yeah, really you’re looking at the darkest area of the human experience, Jane and I, we’ve done yoga for many years, we’re really grounded in our own practices. But, this was a like a whole other level of engagement.
Jane Charles: Yeah, it’s one thing hearing about trafficking. It’s another thing speaking to survivors and seeing young girls that are still young teenagers that were in captivity for some years already, and now they’re out. They’re still young girls. They still have a spirit. They have a future. I think the key, what Jeffrey and I have both come to after meeting so many of the survivors is they have to be healed, then there has to be a way for them to find to be trained and have vocational training and be able to go back to school, get educated and have a future because they have the rest of their lives ahead of them still.
Christopher Buck: Absolutely, and that’s such a need. I know you filmed this on location in India, which is like one of the largest red-light districts in the world. You had to know that like within a stone’s throw of your camera was the girl like Lakshmi, who was, in need of rescue but, faceless in the masses.
