SOLD the Movie: Behind the Scenes

Jeffrey Dean Brown: Yeah, there were like some really kind of horrific moments, that we had. One of them for me was, going into this place called Shunlap which is a, it’s a rescue safe house and, seeing a child who is 13 who has just been rescued and, seeing the sort of animal fear in her face. I’ve been to a couple of wars. I’ve worked with, gang kids and seen a lot of stuff in my life. But, nothing really prepared me for seeing her. Those kind of things were very challenging. But, the good news is that the older girls in Shunlap came up to her and, kind of took her on, talked to her quietly, tenderly. They’re slowly…you could see that these girls were going to bring her back. Along with seeing the darkness, you’re also always pretty much looking at tremendous light, these tremendous incredibly strong people across the board, mostly women but also men who are, going into the brothels, rescuing these kids, helping them recover back from the dead basically.

Christopher Buck: I think that there’s a lot of symbolical elements throughout the entire movie. But, I see two aspects myself. One is about the spirituality underlying everything, especially when you have elements such as the kite, the feather, and the very first scene where she is with her eyes closed and you have the eagle, which is I think a symbol of the human spirit, that the destiny of the human spirit is to soar. But, something, went dark, impeding the spirit to soar. Another aspect was the giving aspect that I noted; like you said, her mother says at the beginning that joy comes in your life when you give, to others. I think this is what really transforms her: There is darkness, but this is the key element that will turn the darkness into light.

Jeffrey Dean Brown: Thank you. Boy, you really got the deeper core of the film. Yeah, totally, that’s what it’s about. For me, the film is not just about human trafficking. It’s about all of our experience on the planet earth. We come in, and often, we’re slapped at birth when we’re welcomed to the planet, and then we have all these like intense experiences that can either shut you down with fear or open you up to compassion and a deeper humanity. And I think the journey of yoga is really about, sort of recognizing that we’re all one ultimately and that we all share the same light, the same source, we all come from the same place, we for the same things. We really crafted this film to serve these kids who were vulnerable, to protect the ones that we can who have not been trafficked but who are vulnerable with education, and then the ones who have been trafficked, to help them heal with iRest and to help them become empowered once again, because when you bring someone back from the dead after a very intense experience like that, they are fearless. They are more fearless than someone who has not been through such a difficult, harrowing journey. And they’re the ones that are going to be the change makers. They’re the ones that are going to free many, many others and change the government’s policies.
