A successful business is often contingent on gaining the right information, but history has shown that beyond the PhDs, business coaching and focus groups, the most powerful business tool may actually be buried deep within you.
In April 1906, the great Wall Street trader, Jesse Livermore, was enjoying a vacation in Atlantic City when, on a hunch, he entered a brokerage and sold 1000 Union Pacific shares short. At the time, it was one of the strongest stocks in a roaring bull market, and the move was so astounding that the broker remarked to Livermore, “You mean to buy Union Pacific?” Livermore’s response was to write another ticket and sell another 2000 shares short. The following day, he increased the total by another 2000 shares. Feeling a strong urge to be back in action, Livermore then ended his vacation abruptly and returned to New York.
A day later, on 18 April 1906, a devastating earthquake hit San Francisco, and within three days Union Pacific stock had plummeted. Jesse Livermore, acting on nothing more than an uncanny premonition, netted a cool US$250,000.
For many, the idea of natural psychic ability – of a sixth-sense – is fantastical nonsense that has no place in the world of modern business. However, the truth is that behind the theatre of crystal balls and flowing velvet, the last century has seen a steady increase in both scientific data and historical evidence in support of this elusive skill. Today, not only is there overwhelming data to suggest that psychic (or psi) abilities exist, there is also compelling evidence that it can be a valuable business tool.
The late Steve Jobs was a well-known advocate of listening to the voice within, imploring people to “have the courage to follow your heart and intuition,” and Richard Branson openly attributes his success to his “gut instinct.” Although many may consider these intuitive insights as simply being data regurgitated from the subconscious, history has shown that people, like Jesse Livermore, can also receive information that belies all logic.
The autobiographies of Abraham Lincoln, Conrad Hilton, Estee Lauder and Winston Churchill are full of stories of premonition and psychic insight, and scientific institutions around the world are researching these phenomena to better understand how it happens, and how it can be harnessed.
One of the most prominent organizations currently researching psi is the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) in California, USA. Founded by Apollo 14 astronaut, Edgar Mitchell, soon after his successful mission to the moon, IONS has conducted thousands of clinical studies to document and better understand these abilities. Working in conjunction with academic kingpins such as Harvard Medical School, Stanford University, Oxford University, Cambridge University and the United Nations, IONS has provided two very important insights into the world of psi. Firstly, they have established that these abilities actually do exist, with a collection of overwhelming clinical evidence. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, studies have shown that psi is a natural function, found to varying degrees of aptitude in every human being.
The human sixth-sense has long been shrouded in a cloak of mystique and superstition, but science and history are finally revealing a new dimension to these phenomena. Rather than an elusive party-trick, psychic insight is now making its way into the boardroom, and may yet prove to be the most powerful business tool of all.
