3 Power Moves to Lead your Team to Success
You can use three timeless power moves to change to a proactive stance that will ensure you have a strong finish to the year.
Vision + Values = Victory – 3 Power Moves to Lead your Team to Success
by Jennifer McKenna WeinbaumCruising through the second quarter marks a time to pause for a moment to consciously ask the question, “Have we kicked off the year in an empowered position?” Just like a computer-generated output, the ‘garbage in, garbage out’ adage holds true for organizations and businesses alike. In other words, how we start often determines how we end.
If you feel you missed out on kicking off the new year in a proactive stance, it’s not too late. Here are three timeless (and priceless) power moves that will ensure a strong finish:
Three Proactive Power Moves
Power Move #1 – Align your Vision
Power Move #2 – Integrate your Values
Power Move #3 – Act with Integrity
Though these steps may seem lofty, they have the potential to be your greatest grounding force. Let’s break them down into measurable milestones that you can activate at any given time.
To align your vision, you must first have a Vision. As a business leader, have you and your leadership team determined your vision for where the company will be in one year, three years, five years, and even ten? If not, this is your first step. Your second step is communicating it company-wide. Consider these to be your goals for the year, and in 2019, you can begin the alignment process.
Alignment simply means that systems, policies, and communication follow suit with the vision. When what we envision and what we actually do aren’t in sync, we struggle unnecessarily. Our success becomes happenstance, leaving employees feeling disempowered. The absence of a well-understood vision creates a nebulous vibe in the environment that allows everyone to make differing (and sometimes inadvertently conflicting) decisions.
As the Japanese proverb goes, “Vision without action is a daydream. Action without Vision is a nightmare.”
The second step, Integrate your Values, suggests the same parallels. Again, if you haven’t clearly outlined your company values, you can determine those when you are working on your vision. Establishing a clear Vision and Values are crucial foundational building blocks for your company.
Integrating your values suggests that you are prioritizing them. Your company values matter, and when they are clearly woven into the fabric of your culture, it is obvious to everyone who encounters your business. Employees feel a stronger sense of purpose, and customers experience the benefit of that.
For example, let’s say one of your company values is Listening. If you have integrated this value into your culture, your employees and customers alike should always feel heard – regardless of whether you agree with what they are saying or not. Or perhaps one of your values is Innovation. This value, if integrated, is evident when both your employees and customers get excited at the thought of what your company is creating next.
Fully integrating your values takes time. Be sure not to choose more than six values if you haven’t yet established them.
Finally, to Act with Integrity assures that your thoughts, words, and deeds are in line with your company Vision and Values. As a leader, you are expected to walk your talk. When you do, your gratification is boundless.
Remember, we live in a world of relativity. The greater your intentions and efforts to live a life of authenticity and a desire to make a positive impact, the more rewards you will reap – and the more you’ll celebrate at year-end.
