Step by Step Instructions to Remember Your Dreams
While some people are able to remember dreams in rich detail, others have no idea how to remember them. The fact is that several factors can affect the memory blocking it or limiting it. Therefore it is necessary to put into practice some techniques to develop it.
Dreams are manifestations of the soul, they are capable of guiding, of warning or taming the dreamer’s feelings. Through them, one will have access to information that one’s conscious mind will not normally let him access. Consequently, understanding their importance is fundamental to making good use of the following steps, allowing one to remember and interpret each of these signals correctly.
1. ACCEPT YOUR DREAMS
It may seem absurd, but many of the people who cannot remember their dreams end up blocking those memories unconsciously. This happens when you are afraid of waking up under the lousy feeling of a nightmare, or a dream that brings up unwanted memories, or even having a restless night and cannot relax. In the great majority of cases, the lack of recollection is reversible, and for this, it is necessary to relax and accept the dreams, as well as the respective meanings that come with them.
2. RELAX AND KEEP FOCUS
It is important to prepare yourself before going to bed. The second step is to learn how to relax and think about what you would like to dream about. Now tell yourself that when you wake up, you would also like to remember what you dreamed about. This technique can increase the chances not only to control the theme of dreams but also to keep the story in its memory. The subconscious start noticing that you are paying attention to the messages and will increase the clarity of your dreams.
3. HOLD THE MEMORY
Before you get out of bed or even change your position when you wake up, stand still and calmly for a minute, and with your eyes closed, go over the scenes of the dream you just had. This process can help you hold onto them and make memories more accessible.
Put the information in order and establish a timeline for subconscious events. Turn the scenes into a story with beginning, middle and end, or at least something with some temporal logic.
4. WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN
The fourth step and perhaps the most important of them is to write down everything you remember as soon as you wake up. To do this, have a little book and pen next to the bed, and leave it always open on a blank page.
If you wake up at dawn and remember something, go to the notebook and write down everything that comes to mind; can be in the form of keywords or how to find it easier. Pay attention to details such as the people present in the dream, the scenery, the relevant objects, and other high points. If you are able to read during your dreams, register the words, you may identify their meaning later.
5. RECORD YOUR DREAMS
For those who wake up too dizzy or sleepy, you can opt for a voice recorder to record what you experienced during the night. It is worth telling the whole story or again releasing just a few keywords to then transcribe the audio to a piece of paper or to a file on your computer where you can better organize this information.
6. DO NOT INTERRUPT YOUR SLEEP
Another valuable way to remember dreams is to sleep until you wake up, simply. No interruptions by alarm clocks, external noises or someone calling you. This can make you have to stop dreaming process, wake up confused and still forget everything in just a few seconds.
With this information in mind, it’s a good idea to start practicing these steps on a weekend, holiday, or another time when you do not have to get up early the next day.
7. GIVE IMPORTANCE TO FLASHBACKS
Throughout the day, it is possible that you may experience some flashbacks of the dreams you had. Do not ignore these views. When you have some recollection of what happened, again reach for your notebook and make the appropriate notes.
8. TELL THE DREAM TO SOMEONE
If you have not been interrupted and you can’t take note, or at least keep the details of your dream in mind, it can be quite advantageous to tell it to another person even if it sounds like the greatest of absurdities. As you tell the story, it is possible that some new insights occur, and that you can add new information to the context.
In another important note, if you have the presence or the training of “waking” up inside your dreams (a Lucid Dreaming technique) you may ask for clarity during the process of dreaming, and your subconscious will try to present the symbols, elements, and facts through a different angle in order to be heard.
