Quieting the Mind Through Yoga

Yoga is one of the oldest forms of exercise, but it is also used for improving the condition of the mind. Here is how yoga can help you to feel calmer.

Centering the Mind

Centering the mind is necessary to quiet the mind, and this requires having a special place for your yoga practice. Choose a space that doesn’t have any distractions that can keep you from focusing. You may need to close the windows in the room to avoid hearing the noises from outside. Some experts suggest that you perform yoga in a dimly lit room. Have a soft rug or blanket to sit and recline on while you are performing your yoga postures.

Deep Breathing Techniques

During yoga, controlling your breathing is essential so that you can quiet your mind. By expelling the air that is in your lungs, you are eliminating the toxins from this organ. This process can involve deep or shallow breathing techniques to help you clear the stressful thoughts from your mind.

Focus Your Thoughts

Yoga teacher training will help you learn more about focusing your thoughts. You can enroll in a class with a knowledgeable yoga practitioner who will begin by helping you to choose a mantra. By saying a mantra to yourself repetitively, you can clear the troubling thoughts from your mind. Beginners can often only clear the mind for a few seconds, but with practice, it is possible to empty the mind for several minutes.

Quiet Music Meditation

For many individuals, listening to quiet music while performing a yoga routine is essential. This is often instrumental music that has no words so that you can overcome the difficult thoughts that are in your mind. Having a CD player in your yoga exercise area is vital so that you can turn on the music quickly to listen to it.

Special Yoga Postures

There are certain yoga postures that are recommended for clearing the mind. These poses often require saluting the sun or sitting quietly with the eyes closed. During these postures, you may focus on looking at the sky, or alternatively, you might close your eyes to center your thoughts.

You might not think that quieting the mind is helpful, but research reveals that it can eliminate stress along with improving your emotional stability. Additional benefits include improving your memory and increasing your self-awareness.
