The Astral Travel Phenomenon
Astral travel is the belief that the soul can leave the body, visiting other places on Earth and beyond. Also known as ‘soul travel,’ the practice is taught with meditation techniques and affirmed by repeating mantras in Sehaj yoga to visit Heaven’s many planes.
What is Astral Travel?
Helen Keller described an astral travel experience like this, “I have been far away all this time, and I haven’t left the room…It was clear to me that it was because I was a spirit that I had so vividly ‘seen’ and felt a place a thousand miles away. Space was nothing to spirit!”
Astral travel has been documented by many throughout history. In 1875 Helena Blavatsky founded the Theosophical Society, whose teachings included the ability to transcend the body through spirit travel to anywhere. The religion of Eckankar describes astral travel as a movement of the soul closer to the heart of God. One of the basic tenets is that soul (the true self) may be experienced separate from the physical body and in full consciousness travel freely in “other planes of reality. This is attained by shifting the awareness from the body to the inner planes of existence.
For many years, Dr. Raymond Moody, a physician, psychologist, philosopher, and author, interviewed hundreds of people who had experienced out-of-body events. Well known for his books about life after death and near-death experiences (NDE), a term he invented in 1975, he collected information and defined these experiences’ common qualities. He identified nine elements of a near-death out-of-body experience. There are similar accounts of people who reported their consciousness was floating above their bodies. Others had seen themselves in surgery or when they were receiving life-saving assistance.
Many people have experienced astral travel unexpectedly while dreaming without fully understanding what happened. It’s really more than just feeling the anxiety of an ‘out of body experience, which is a different event altogether. It knows you are visiting somewhere else. You are remote, viewing what is around you and speaking to other souls who are also astral traveling. You have information that you would never have known if not for astral travel. We travel in our dream state while sleeping most of the time and may not remember it upon awakening. Science claims they have no real ‘proof’ that it is possible, but they don’t have any that it definitely isn’t either. Hopefully, scientists will soon discover a way to ‘see’ it happening, and we will understand more about consciousness. The pineal gland inside the brain is a miraculous part of this phenomenon.
Many metaphysics courses teach that you can fly, walk through walls, and bi-locate (experience multiple streams of consciousness) in the astral worlds when purposely traveling. It is also taught that you must be in control of your thoughts and emotional state to choose what you want your experience. If not, you can attract energies that can do more harm than good. It has been suggested that if you are highly depressed, actively practicing astral projection may not be a good idea. It’s best to enter the astral worlds with temperance, projecting a pleasant frame of mind.
In meditation, astral travel allows us to become attuned to the universal energies available to life forms. We can call on the metaphysical abilities that are constantly evolving in humans to help us bring in peace, calm, healing power, and information we so dearly need. There are many techniques and methods available to study. Practice is necessary to help call in the energetic frequencies to affect our dream state. With time, a practitioner can exit a dream and re-enter. As more people become aware of this, past beliefs of what is and isn’t possible will transform into a greater understanding of our evolution. Souls are alive in human bodies with divine connections to help us connect, survive and thrive.
