The Temperance Card: Tarot Arcana for August 2022
The Arcane Temperance Card in the Tarot is a card linked to balance and the energetic center of our existence.
The Temperance Card – The Arcana of Balance
Temperance is corporeal piety; it is the preservation of divine order in the body. ~ Theodore Parker
When we see the beautiful angel that illustrates this arcane, we notice that there is a magical passage of the liquid that goes from one cup to another without falling to the ground. This simple image can bring all the teaching from this archetype.
Like the card of justice, Temperance is a card of balance, pondering, and cautious attention.
But in the case of this arcane, I believe it is an internal, spiritual balance since the central figure has an angelic representation.
In this card, we see water being distributed between two glasses in an attempt that the amount of liquid is sensibly the same in each of them. Water also symbolizes our emotional body.
When it appears, the arcana advises us not to do anything hastily. Instead, it is preferable to observe and consider before acting.
The Temperance card may ask us not to have extreme attitudes that are “all black” or “all white” but to be something balanced, tempered, and open to inclusion.
Depending on the situation, you may ask us for this recollection and tranquility so that we can consider and act in a balanced way.
It can also indicate that a particular person needs that thoughtful energy nearby. It can also mean the absence of an expected reaction on the part of someone, maybe because that person is herself working on containing extreme responses in search of some respect.
Temperance, in the nobler sense, does not mean subdued and imperfect energy; it does not mean stopping short in any good thing, as in love and in faith; but it means the power which governs the most intense energy and prevents its acting in a way but as it ought. ~ John Ruskin
The Temperance Card and the Symbols of Spiritual Alchemy
The fourteenth card of the Tarot is represented by an archangel. This entity pours and shifts water and fire from one vessel to another.
It symbolizes moderation, improvements, negotiations, slow but sure evolution, and adapting to circumstances positively. It stabilizes situations with a perspective of continuity and future security.
The Arcana keywords are balance and simplicity, and moderation.
Different Meanings for Different Souls
For teenagers in general: Improved studies, higher grades, emotional stability, good exam results.
When related to adult persons: Professional advancement, smooth negotiations, financial or love stability, reconciliations, ability to understand others.
For older adults: Easy adaptation, familiar understanding, attention, and gifts.
Meaning of the Reversed card: Distraction, the tendency towards impossible dreams.
Temperance – “The theme of this card associates temperance with Aquarius, the water bearer, the eleventh sign of the zodiac.” (Nichols, 1980).
The Power of Inner Alchemy
In the therapeutic process, the card may show a lack of balance of emotions. Very cold or very warm person. Problems in letting life flow and resolving conflicts naturally. The person can’t see the resolution because he doesn’t analyze all parts of the problem. It may announce circulatory problems. Lack of trust in the flow of life. Impatience.
Aleister Crowley, the famous occultist of the last century, called this arcane “The Art” because it is the perfect alchemy, the Great Art of merging with the opposite, with the opposite outside and the opposite inside, all within of us.
In us is the Great Art, the Alchemical Opus. We are the mysteries. Within us reside the opposites. We are water and fire, besides air and earth.
Temperance speaks of ambivalent feelings because it is water and fire, both elements related to emotions and the spiritual, but at the same time opposed to each other.
The Personification of Transcendence
In the mythological Tarot, this arcane is represented by the Goddess Iris, the Goddess of the Rainbow, the winged messenger of the Gods, the one who carried out the desires of Gods and humans, whatever they may be.
In this sense, Temperance warns us to always do everything possible to avoid losing harmony (or false harmony). There is no growth, for there is no natural fluidity. For this reason, Temperance can symbolize stagnation in order not to generate conflict.
The rainbow is the natural expression of the fusion of water with fire, as rainwater is united with sunlight. The archetype is related to all the processes of transformation. These processes demand not to haste but, on the contrary, a slow fluidity and cautious flow.
So don’t expect too much speed on the issues under Temperance’s domain during August. Remember: success will depend on how much you can merge with opposites, achieve inner balance, and actually understand the difference between your wants and needs.
