The Latest Innovations in Eyewear Lens Technology
Innovative lenses are in great demand, especially now that more people have problems with their vision. Business Wire reveals that there are now around 2.2 billion people living with some form of vision impairment due to increased gadget use, old age, or health conditions. As a result, the demand for spectacle lenses is increasing, and it’s expected that the market could reach a compound annual growth rate of 5.08% until 2026.
Companies are further driving up the demand by creating innovative lenses that can either prevent or address vision impairment.
NASA polarized lens
Polarized lenses are quite popular among consumers because they are effective in blocking glare and reflected glare. As such, these lenses can increase the clarity of one’s vision and improve their comfort.
However, one of the innovations in lens technology is the polarized lenses developed by NASA. NASA notes that the polarimeter on the Imaging X-Ray Polarimeter Explorer measures how much polarized light can be detected to determine the strength of an object’s magnetic field. The same principle is applied to polarized lenses, which have tiny filters that only allow small amounts of light to pass through. Eyewear brand Eagle Eyes Optics leveraged this NASA technology to create sunglass lenses with tiny filters that can eliminate 100% of harmful UV wavelengths.
Blue-violet light filter
While polarized lenses prevent eye strain caused by the sun, lenses with blue-violet light filters reduce eye strain and damage caused by increased gadget use.
Many people have long screen times per day because of their study, work, or entertainment needs. Due to this lifestyle shift, LensCrafters now hosts plenty of eyewear brands now offer blue light glasses, which include treatments designed to filter blue-violet light from gadgets. A blue-violet light filter is an innovation in clear and sun lens technology and was created to shield the retina from specific light frequencies that come from electronics. Wearing lenses with these filters reduces one’s risk for vision impairment and prevents any sleep delays caused by blue-light exposure.
Prizm technology
Oakley’s Prizm lens technology has been designed to enhance visual clarity for athletes and extreme sports enthusiasts.
By fine-tuning wavelengths of light, Prizm lenses fitted into Oakley sunglasses enhance contrast, color, and detail, tailoring the visual experience to specific activities. Whether skiing, biking, or playing sports, Prizm lenses optimize vision, revealing subtleties in the environment. This technology heightens perception, helping users react more effectively to changing conditions. From snowy slopes to vibrant trails, Prizm lenses provide unparalleled optical precision, enhancing both safety and performance.
C-Scape lens technology
Eyeglasses can improve the clarity of one’s vision. However, these eyewear pieces can also limit people’s vision because they can shrink the field of view and cause peripheral blur.
Costa Sunglasses resolved this problem by creating their innovative C-Scape lens technologies. Sport-fishing professionals and lens designers developed these lenses to ensure that eyeglasses with C-Scape lenses have enhanced viewing fields for greater visual clarity. These C-Scape lenses also minimize peripheral blur, thanks to the Costa Waypoint digital technology. Through these innovative lenses, people with vision impairments will be able to pick up finer details from their peripheral vision.
EnChroma lens technologies
Color blindness can make it difficult for people to tell certain colors apart. Though there’s no cure for this condition, people can use glasses with certain lenses to correct their color vision.
One of these lenses is developed by the inventor of EnChroma, Don McPherson. McPherson was developing eye protection lenses for surgeons using laser when his friend noticed that the lenses were able to correct his color vision deficiencies. EnChroma was able to help tens of thousands of colorblind people through their lens technology, which filters overlapping light wavelengths to make it easier to distinguish colors. Aside from helping people with color blindness, EnChroma also created the Lx lens series to improve the vision of people with macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts. These Lx lenses make it easier for people with vision problems to experience greater independence and better mobility.
People rely a lot on their vision, which is why it’s crucial to have lenses that can enhance one’s sight. Thanks to these new lens technologies, it will be easier for people to enjoy their hobbies and navigate through their daily lives.
