The Ultimate Guide to Initiatory Journeys: How to Use Holidays to Awaken Your Soul

When holidays come around, it’s time to plan a well-deserved rest. Even during the holidays, it’s possible to plan a trip to renew your energy and relax, whether as a couple, with family, or with friends. Traveling is always delightful and undoubtedly one of the best remedies when we feel stressed, sad, tired, and out of energy. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love to travel!

But trips can be much more than leisure and rest. Taking advantage of these breaks in routine to combine relaxation, reflection, and spiritual connection is a great idea. Visiting sacred places with subtle spiritual energy will have a profound and emotional effect and bring knowledge and information. More and more people are opting for this type of travel, which is why the market for spiritually guided and initiatory trips is growing.

All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.

Martin Buber

THE BENEFITS OF SPIRITUAL TRAVEL

Just like a common trip, where we cover a certain distance to be in a different place, spiritual travel has the same effect on our soul: it shifts the spirit to a new reality. When we decide on a mystical destination where metaphysical energies are stronger, or we visit a sacred and historic place, we send a message to the cosmos that affirms the desire to know the truth, the origin, showing that we are open to growth and the energies that promote evolution.

“If you want to travel far and fast, travel light. Leave behind all your envy, jealousy, inability to forgive, selfishness, and fears.”

– Glenn Clark

That’s why it’s not uncommon to be guided by the spiritual world to certain places that previously seemed to have no connection to us. It’s like the saying: “When the student is ready, the master appears”; in this case, when we are prepared, the journey comes to us. Even when we choose a destination based on conveniences, we can be surprised by synchronicity, the interconnection between all things, and the enormous significance a journey can acquire. We go exactly where we should go to hear the message we need. It’s surprising.

The people who appear on our path during a spiritual journey are also not there by chance and almost always come to complete this journey. They always have something to offer and teach us, so pay attention to those around you during such a trip. A friendship for life may begin during an initiatory journey.

The end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started. ~ T. S. Eliot

Finally, whether we are aware of it or not, our entire being will be impacted by the energies of the place we choose as a destination, whether it is spiritual or not. Each city has its energy, which harmonizes with ours. Our aura will exchange energy with the environment and the collective energy that has formed there, so, depending on the location, we may encounter an accelerating force for conscious awakening.

Some Places are Spiritual Vortexes

Dimensional portals feed the mysticism that surrounds the region and strengthen its title as a metaphysical sanctuary. The place also offers a deep spiritual cleansing, where the traveler bathes in the river of energy to invigorate body and soul.

WORLD DESTINATIONS: SPIRITUAL PLACES

These descriptions provide a beautiful and evocative picture of various spiritual and historical destinations worldwide. Each site carries a deep sense of history, spirituality, and cultural significance. From the tranquil grounds of Bodhgaya, where the Buddha achieved enlightenment, to the bustling spiritual hubs of Kathmandu; from the solemnity of the Vatican to the historic profundity of Jerusalem; from the mystical ruins of Turkey to the serene Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey in Spain; and the powerful spiritual presence of Fátima and the enigmatic Quinta da Regaleira in Portugal, each location invites travelers to a unique experience that transcends the physical journey, offering a deep dive into the spiritual and mystical traditions that have shaped human history and consciousness.

These sites are not just tourist destinations but are considered sacred by many, providing a profound connection to the divine and the universal human quest for meaning and enlightenment.

Initiatory Journeys – INDIA

Bodhgaya, in India, is an incredible destination and one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Buddhists, as it was there that Buddha attained enlightenment, sitting in meditation under a tree. In addition, Bodhgaya is home to various representations of his passage, such as the Buddha tree next to the Mahabodhi Temple, a meditation temple.

For those who want to connect with Buddhism and Hinduism, India gives the feeling of having traveled to another planet. There is so much to see that it is impossible to summarize just in a few words.

Initiatory Journeys – KATHMANDU

Despite being noisy and bustling, Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is a true encounter with spirituality. One can have intense moments of meditation and peace either in the temples and sacred pilgrimage sites like Boudhanath (the most sacred Buddhist site in Nepal), in Swayambhunath, a Buddhist pilgrimage complex known as the Monkey Temple, or Patan, known for Durbar Square, a World Heritage Cultural site by UNESCO.

Initiatory Journeys – VATICAN

For Catholics, the Vatican is almost an obligatory destination. Watching the Pope’s speech during the Angelus prayer on Sundays at noon in St. Peter’s Square is moving. It’s also possible to extend the tour and learn a little about Italy and other spiritual tourist destinations in the country.

Initiatory Journeys – JERUSALEM

Of all the destinations, Jerusalem is certainly the most famous and desired destination for those who pilgrimage around the world in search of spirituality. The Holy Land is a route for many followers of the Abrahamic religions: Christians, Muslims, and Jews who seek the place to get closer to physical manifestations of their faith and to reinforce beliefs, in addition to feeling the energy of the place.

According to the Christian Bible, Jerusalem is considered sacred for being where Jesus suffered and died. For Jews, it is important to have been the capital of the kingdom of Judah and for housing the ruins of Solomon’s Temple. For Muslims, Jerusalem is where the mosque that houses the Dome of the Rock is located, from where Muhammad is believed to have ascended to the heavens.

Initiatory Journeys – TURKEY

In this gorgeous country, on the outskirts of Ephesus, lie the ruins of the church where the tomb of Saint John the Evangelist is located, as well as the house where the Virgin Mary is said to have spent her last years. Reports say that the vibration of this house is very strong, and legends tell of some phenomena that have occurred in the vicinity.

“Travel is discovering that everyone is wrong about other countries.”

Initiatory Journeys – SPAIN

Castles, breathtaking landscapes, and a lot of history. This is Spain, this small European territory that has transcended the continent. But beyond the food, good music, stunning architecture, and much history, Spain has many spiritual destinations, including the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, which deserves attention. This Benedictine monastery houses the image of Our Lady Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, the region’s patron saint. In addition, the monastery is surrounded by a mountain, and crossing it already promotes a breathtaking experience.

Initiatory Journeys – SANCTUARY OF FÁTIMA AND QUINTA DA REGALEIRA

In Portugal, it is the so-called “altar of the world,” as the Sanctuary of Fátima is also known. Beyond its beauty, the place has an incredible, exciting, and touching energy. It was built around where the Virgin Mary made six appearances over six months, ending with the Miracle of the Sun. The sanctuary is located in Fátima and is easily accessible from all regions of the country.

Besides the sanctuary of Fátima, getting to know the energy and history that built Quinta da Regaleira is an incredible journey for those more mystical souls. Located in Sintra, Lisbon, the estate gathers architectural beauty, history, and magic, especially when we talk about the famous inverted tower. This tower appears upside down because it was built into the earth. Called the Initiation Well, the legend says that the place is the union between heaven and earth.

The place is a “medieval Disneyland,” with bridges, tunnels, towers, walls, viewpoints, gardens, and a beautiful palace that mixes the country’s history with the Templars and Moors. It is a very mystical place and well worth a visit. At the minimum, it will open your mind to the curious medieval rituals of Spiritual Initiation.
