The Noosphere: A Paradigm Shift in Earth’s Evolution

Noosphere

The noosphere, literally meaning “mind-sphere” or “sphere of human thought,” is a term and concept jointly created in 1926 in Paris by French philosopher and student Henri Bergson, Édouard Le Roy, Jesuit paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and Russian geochemist Vladimir Vernadsky.

Is the Noosphere the new Human Global Consciousness?

With enough of us connecting heart with heart, center with center, innovation with innovation, prayer with prayer, through the internet and the noosphere, we can have a major impact on a gentler transition toward the next stage of evolution.

 ~ Barbara Marx Hubbard

At the heart of the noosphere’s primary definition is a dual perception: firstly, that life on Earth constitutes a unified system known as the biosphere, and secondly, that the mind or consciousness of life – the layer of thought on Earth – forms a unit that is discontinuous yet coextensive with the entire life system on Earth, signifying the global human consciousness.

The noosphere represents a third stage in Earth’s development, following the geosphere and biosphere. A third idea arising from the first two is that the noosphere defines the next inevitable stage of terrestrial evolution, which will subsume and transform the biosphere. How this evolutionary shift might occur remains a pivotal point of the theory.

In traditional science, different dimensions of the planet can be contemplated. There is the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. For some, another dimension exists – the noosphere. Those who believe in the noosphere argue that Earth is a living being endowed with intelligence.

This term is a neologism formed by the word ‘noos,’ meaning knowledge, and ‘sphere.’ Proponents of the noosphere concept, primarily Vladimir Vernadsky and Teilhard de Chardin, argue for its existence.

Traditional biology denies the existence of a noosphere. At about 4.5 billion years old, Earth first developed the geosphere – the tectonic plates and continents. Subsequently, the hydrosphere, or the collection of oceans, formed.

Likewise, the atmosphere and the biosphere facilitated the emergence of diverse life forms on the planet.

Those who advocate for the noosphere contend that the planet’s evolution necessarily corresponds to the existence of a living being. Like any other living entity, Earth possesses self-regulation mechanisms, reacts to external stimuli, and particularly responds to the Sun’s action. However, from the perspective of conventional biology, an organism must be born from another living being and reproduce to be considered alive.

Consequently, the scientific community regards belief in a noosphere as a pseudoscientific theoretical model.

The noosphere or mind of our planet represents a new evolutionary period for Earth. For the planet to maintain synchronization, it requires its own intelligence to organize everything that exists rationally.

Functioning similarly to the human brain, just as our brain processes a range of data, the noosphere also has its capacity to organize everything that occurs on Earth.

I believe that the World Wide Web is, as a matter of fact, the noogenesis of the noosphere of the future. This is it!

 ~ Ralph Abraham

The consciousness of the noosphere is not located at a specific point, unlike the connection between the mind and the brain. The supposed world mind is not found here or there and can be found everywhere in turn.

Proponents of a global mind theorize that a higher mind governs various fundamental forces (e.g., gravity or electromagnetic force). In this sense, each cell of our body is connected to the noosphere.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin predicted the emergence of the noosphere at a peak mystical moment referred to as the Omega Point. This moment would result from the interactions of increasing human activities, creating a highly charged “layer of thought.”

Teilhard spoke of planets with a noosphere – planets where the thought layer advances to the stage where it produces a noosphere, a mental layer “above and discontinuous with the biosphere.” Thus, Teilhard de Chardin wrote about a “network of ever more literally present links, in the immensity of its organism, as the image of a nervous system.”

What is the Noosphere?

The Technosphere

Since Teilhard de Chardin died in 1955 when his books could finally be published, most notably “The Phenomenon of Man” (1959) and “The Future of Man” (1964), the advancement of the biosphere into a transitional stage, the Technosphere, has seen the fulfillment of Chardin’s prerequisite for the manifestation of the noosphere. This would be a global network of information – geotechnology – the Internet. As the penultimate stage in developing a freely functioning thought layer, the Internet electronically connects the noosphere before the mystical moment of The Omega Point.

Such theories only prove that much is still studied about the Universe, especially human consciousness and its relations with the astrophysical world.
