Ask Spiritual Questions February 2026 – Question:
Dear Royce,
Every time I sit down to do my job or try to accomplish something in my life, my sense of inadequacy takes over. I’m convinced that I’m a failure, a fraud, and terrified that someone will find out. Do you have any words of wisdom to help someone committed to a spiritual purpose overcome Impostor Syndrome?

Ask Spiritual Questions February 2026 – Answer:
Dear Spiritual Scammer,
The Competence Paradox: Why the Best Feel Like Fakes
First of all, statistics prove that people who tend to suffer from Imposter Syndrome are precisely the ones who are the most competent at what they do. From my personal experience, spiritually minded people are even more susceptible to this Syndrome because of their intensified sensitivity, emotional depth, integrity, and care about the world. Plus, they often feel the need to fulfill a higher purpose. This can create overwhelm and doubt about accomplishing such a big mission. Add to that, most spiritual disciplines encourage letting go of the ego. This practice can create a fertile ground for feeling fake.
The Universal Secret: Almost Everyone Feels This Way
Although psychologists give this label to a select few, I have seen it in almost everyone. This is especially true once they start being brutally honest with themselves. The most universal symptom is feeling unworthy of what life has given them. They often spend time worrying about being exposed or busted as fakers. In addition, they have mastered excuses and other ways to be ready for it. They have deep-seated notions that whatever they accomplished was due to luck, coincidence, having a good contact, being in the right place at the right time, or simply an accidental fluke.
The Confidence Facade: Even Narcissists Are Hiding
Frankly, even those whose actions portray the overt confidence share the deep, dark secret of feeling like a complete fraud. Yes, I include narcissists in this category since they have manufactured the most dramatic, unsuspecting ways to cover their scammings!
The Core Belief: Inadequacy Despite Evidence
Imposter Syndrome reflects the core belief that you are inadequate, incompetent, and a failure – even if there is evidence that you are smart, talented, and successful. It makes you feel unable to own your achievements. Moreover, it is the cause of anxiety, low confidence, and lots of self-sabotage.
The Roots: Early Triggers and Subconscious Programs
The roots of this Syndrome start early in life (or in past lives) from incidents that trigger a sense of self-worthlessness, morphing into an attitude of not deserving to succeed. This subconscious program runs in the background. Consequently, it colors everything in your life, from relationships to career success to health.
Beyond Band-Aids: Why Positive Thinking Isn’t Enough
There are lots of suggestions for coping with Impostor Syndrome, but most advise you just to counter those self-deprecating thoughts or “think positive.” I believe that these methods are band-aids rather than a resolution.
Step 1: Cultivate Consciousness and Listen to Fear
Here are some suggestions: The first step in resolving Imposter Syndrome is being conscious. The Syndrome gets triggered when you are stressed or anxious, so remind yourself that you are just in fear (False Evidence Appearing Real). Your body and your breathing are probably giving you signals. So, stop and listen to them to hear what fears have been triggered.
Step 2: Have an Honest Inner Dialogue
As you notice those fear-based reactions, try having an honest conversation with yourself. Ask yourself such things as: What is this fear? What is this fear really about? Why am I afraid of having love/success/deservingness?
The Praise Test: A Mirror of Your Self-Belief
A good way to instantly tell you believe you are an “Imposter” is by noticing how uncomfortable you are with praise. Do you assume that the flatterer is just being nice? Or that they had to say that; it would be impolite not to. Or you write off a success as being no big deal.
The Success Paradox: Why More Achievement Feels Like More Pressure
Here’s another thing to notice: The more success you experience (the more attention you get, the more money you make, etc.), the more pressure you feel because of the increased responsibility and visibility. Do you feel even more frantic about proving yourself and covering up your “lie” about how you achieved success?
The Path to Permanent Resolution: Dig, Discover, and Release
Once you realize that your Impostor programming is running you, permanently resolving it does take some digging, discovery, and releasing of where the negativity took hold (that’s what the inner work I offer is all about). Once those roots are discovered, pulled out, and neutralized, you can allow your true competence to flow. Therefore, you can deserve freedom from the prison of self-doubt.
The Hidden Root: Traumatic Decisions of Undeservingness
Those hidden roots invariably lead to traumatic incidents where you decided you do not deserve. From then on, you believe you are not enough. As a result, whatever success you achieve feels undeserved, as if a phony received it.
Your True Purpose: Remembering Why You Are Here
Remember, you chose to be here to offer unique gifts of value to others and the world. You deserve to unlock your true potential and achieve your goals, you deserve to own and experience what you have achieved, and celebrate it!
