Understanding and Experiencing Karmic Liability

Usually, when we experience drastic changes in our personality, way of acting, or thinking, we begin to consider the bad things that happen to us as karma for having hurt or deceived someone, being selfish, or even having had baseless negative thoughts. In other words, we find ourselves experiencing a kind of return of all the negative actions we once practiced.

However, it is important to keep in mind that it’s not only negative attitudes that return in this balance; all our positive, altruistic, charitable, and benevolent actions also come back as positive karma in our lives. The association of karma as something negative comes from a natural tendency of human beings to remember more negative events, as being hurt or hurting others usually marks our memories much more than pleasant and joyful moments.

The Meaning of the Word Karma

The best way to understand the concept of karma is to realize that everything around us has its own energy, just like we do. This means that every time we interact with the Universe around us, these actions produce a particular energy that can be good or bad. Karma is translated under this concept of “doing and reaping the entire field of physical, verbal, and mental actions.”

This particularity of the energies generated in each action can create situations where we cannot recognize the real harm we cause when we act unjustly toward someone. The way each one will receive these energies is different; therefore, humans tend to react much less indifferently when going through the same situation. By experiencing the other side of the coin, we create greater empathy for the feelings of others.

In Hindi, the word ‘karma’ means action. Originating from Buddhist, Hindu, and Jainism religions, the term has also been adopted in Spiritualism. Essentially, karma dictates that for every action, whether good or bad, there is a reaction, an equivalent force in the opposite direction.

Every deed has a consequence; the law of karma confirms this. In other words, we will experience the effects of our actions in this life or future existence. It’s also known in many religions as celestial justice, as it ensures that people receive what they deserve based on their actions.

Cause and Effect

At this point, one can better understand what karma and the law of cause and effect mean. They are basically about balance and understanding, so receiving the return of your actions by directly experiencing their causes is certainly a very effective way of understanding the magnitude of your acts.

However, as mentioned, this concept also applies to the positive return of energies, or positive karma, as it is known. Even though these do not mark us in the same way as more bitter experiences, attitudes that result in good should produce energies rich in positive charges and that will surround us with a magnetism conducive to happy events.

This idea of positive or negative return, always according to a magnetic aura that we are responsible for creating, demonstrates personal mastery over what happens in our lives and that we should plan the future by assuming responsibilities without placing all the weight of acts and decisions on fate.

What Role Does Empathy Play in Understanding Karmic Liability?

Empathy is central to understanding karmic liability, fostering a deep awareness of all actions’ interconnectedness and consequences. By stepping into another’s shoes, we gain insight into our deeds’ emotional and spiritual impact. This understanding nurtures a more conscious approach to our decisions and behaviors. Empathy allows us to comprehend the ripple effects of our actions, encouraging us to act with kindness and consideration. It becomes a guiding light, helping us navigate the complexities of karma, ensuring our actions contribute positively to our own karmic journey and that of others, ultimately leading to a more harmonious existence.
