Instant Karma

In my research, I was surprised at just how many definitions the word karma has. Karma’s meaning depends on the religion, spiritual beliefs and even the era in which it was written and defined. “What goes around comes around!” “Everything you do, comes back to you” “Do unto others” “You will reap what you sow” and so forth.

Our spiritual intentions matter. If we intend to help someone, to lift them up when they are down then we must understand the reason why. Is it because we want to receive something in return? Is it because we would want the same done for us? Is it because we have true love and compassion for our fellow humans and expect nothing in return? Do we understand that good acts and intentions will reap the same but maybe in different form or from another source to come later in our lives or even after our life here on Earth is over? Most spiritual teachings stress the fact that our actions should always be with good intent without ever expecting anything in return.

We have life themes, purposes and past lives that are all tied to karma. In those themes and purposes, our lives are intertwined with others to help perfect our souls. In that respect, we may be playing the part of the catalyst, the victim, or the victimizer. Just like actors on a stage we play out our roles, helping each other to learn and grow and evolve. Therefore, we are also taught not to judge each other but to understand the reactions and consequences for every action taken.

If someone’s intent is to be rich and famous for selfish reasons, they may learn a very painful lesson by losing it all in the public limelight. If their intent was to inspire, help others to heal, and share their wealth with those who have less, they may know great joy and happiness all their lives. I know we all can think of several examples of this scenario playing out in the media.

Several years ago, I knew a man who filed a million dollar lawsuit for severe and life threatening injuries he suffered in a freak accident. He intended to win and to buy himself a very expensive sports car and several other things that he felt he deserved. His actions became arrogant and selfish and he was convinced he could make a jury feel sorry for him and persuade them to award him this money. His lawyer had convinced him they would win on sympathy. He lost the case, went into shock for days, threatened to kill himself and drowned his sorrows in alcohol. After a while he realized that his intentions had been very negative and self-serving and this was the outcome he deserved. He became sober, found a new career and moved on with his life. He never became a millionaire or was able to buy that car but he became successful and content in his work and his life.

When I was in grade school, I was bullied without mercy by a girl named Cindy. She had it out for me because the boy she liked said he liked me. She and a band of her friends walked around every recess holding hands and yelling, “We hate Judi!” over and over again for what seemed liked weeks. She said she was going to get me one day and punch me in the face. Everyday I hid behind the gym and prayed for them to go away.

One day, sitting in my safe spot at recess I heard, “We hate Cindy, We hate Cindy!” being chanted. She came running around the side of the gym in tears to face me sitting there reading a book. She told me that everyone had now turned against her and she had no friends. I remember it like it was yesterday, I told her that I would be her friend if she needed one. She said “Are you crazy? I was mean to you!” and walked away. She never spoke to me again, the girls continued to chant at her everyday for weeks and the next year her family moved to another town. I always wondered if she ever bullied  anyone again. That was the first time I truly understood karma. The lesson here was for both of us to learn. I had forgiven her at the same instant I saw her pain which had mirrored mine. I knew how it felt.

We decide our fate with our decisions and our devotions. Some faiths believe that if you practice evil acts in one life, that you will come back as a lower life form or suffer all your next life in awful ways. The Kabbalah teachings say that even though our lives are influenced by fate, our free will can change our destiny greatly. Which means that we can redeem ourselves from negative actions and change our karma for the better. We can alter the path and change our fate.

The funniest thing to me is when someone has told me that they are thinking of doing something or have done something that they know is not ethical or moral. And I will ask why they think this is okay. Well who is going to know, they say! And I always answer, you will know and if you believe in God (or a supreme being), then God will know. And if you understand that you are a part of God, then you are truly only hurting yourself!

We truly are in the time of Ascension on this planet, and everything is moving at a much faster pace! Instant karma time means that as the New Earth is evolving, we will experience our karmic lessons much faster as well. Reason would tell us then that as we are co-creating this new World, most of us are on our last life missions here.

Does instant karma mean that two minutes after someone commits an evil deed, a piano will fall from the sky onto their head? Well, anything is possible I suppose. More likely that they will get caught a lot sooner than they think, but either way they will have to answer for their deeds when doing their spiritual life review.

Good thoughts, good intentions, healthy living, and sending out love to everyone and everything in the Universe can do no harm. So if it is instant karma time, let it all be good!
