Destiny: What is Your Mountain to Climb?
By Rev. Marcy Ellen
I absolutely love this topic and I will tell you that in my own experience with my life, I absolutely believe in fate or destiny. However, I also believe that we are creating that destiny on our own terms. In other words I believe we all choose a blueprint for our life but we have a lot of creative liberty with how to transform that blueprint into a reality.
The way I view it is as if every person chooses a mountain to climb in each specific life time. That mountain is the blueprint. The mountain never changes but the way you choose to climb it changes constantly based on how you choose to exercise your own free will. For instance some people may only climb a quarter of the mountain in their lifetime, some may keep falling down the mountain, some people will reach the summit and may choose to climb it again taking different paths and seeing different things. Some people may climb quickly, some may climb slowly, and some people will know exactly which mountain they are climbing while others may be looking for a map to guide them the entire way up.
There are certainties that we have with our blueprints and that is where predicting future outcomes comes in. You can understand how some people have a certain knowing about their journey because when they are fully tuned into their blueprint they can tell which things they definitely will not encounter on their journey. If you are climbing a mountain that has no lakes for example you can say with certainty that you won’t be seeing any lakes on your journey. When Oprah was a little girl and all the women in her family explained to her that it was the fate of the women in her family to become maids, she had an absolute knowing that being a maid was not going to be a part of her journey. She knew with certainty that being a maid wasn’t in her blueprint. Everyone has a blueprint and we are all operating from it even if only subconsciously.
When you hear people say “everything happens for a reason”, they are referring to the synchronicity that the universe uses to keep us all working from this blueprint. These synchronicities are like signs guiding you to the right path or trail which leads you to the next path and the next one but all the while you are still climbing your mountain. Knowing what your blueprint looks like, knowing which mountain you are climbing, or just knowing that you have a blueprint even, can help you to eliminate fear about where you are headed. When you have faith that no matter what you do you are never going to wake up and be on a different mountain then you can begin to relax more and live in the present moment. You might get sidetracked on different trails, you might stop moving completely and camp out for a while, but as long as when you are moving you are moving upward then you are still climbing your mountain.
There is a balance between fate and free will. Your fate or your blueprint is always there to fall back on so don’t stress out every day about how, if, and when you are going to get to the top. In the end it doesn’t matter if you make it to the top or if you fall all the way down multiple times. All that matters on your journey up the mountain is that you learned more about yourself and the terrain, you helped other climbers along the way, and most importantly that you experienced love and joy in the midst of it all.
