Polly Campbell: The Perfect, Imperfect Spirituality
Thirdly, look to how those values play out in your life. If you are doing things that aren’t close to your values, stop doing them—cold turkey. If others need an explanation then you can lovingly provide one. This is about you being accountable to you and your spirit. Often though, once you reconnect with your values you’ll discover ways to be responsible and caring and stay in line with your purpose and passions. It may require a mental shift, but then the experience becomes more satisfying. For example, I was getting so tired of feeding my young daughter…a long and messy process when she was two. Then I realized that I wasn’t doing a chore, I was nourishing her and our family and that was one of my values. When I had that mental shift, I felt better about what I was doing.
Omtimes: How can folding clothes and grocery shopping and cat-litter changing and all the chores of life become part of a spiritual path and practice?
Polly: Everything in life offers a chance for you to connect with spirit. Often, the most mundane chores become a practice in gratitude for me. I just did this the other day. I was folding laundry and feeling immensely grateful for the clothes that I had to fold, and the washer and dryer that helped clean them. Every moment provides an opportunity for gratitude, curiosity, acceptance, surrender. You’ve got to go looking for it and then put your practice in place.
Omtimes: If I did one thing today to enhance my spiritual practice, what would you suggest?
Polly: Set aside time every day for a spiritual practice of your choosing. Start with a minimum of five minutes, make it clear to your family that you are going to do this and do it, without fail, no matter the circumstance, every day. It’s a gift to yourself and you’ll be amazed at what will come out of it. Also, smile and give thanks. Gratitude is THAT powerful
