HALT! It’s Time for Indulging in Self Care

by Veronica Lee

Sometimes we confuse self-care with selfishness. In society’s view, it is not always seen as a appropriate to focus on one’s self. “It is better to give than to receive” seems to be so ingrained in our thought pattern, that if we do allow ourselves to receive, we can often feel guilty for doing so. In the least, most of us put a cap on our receiving and self-care allowance.

Unfortunately, many people are so disconnected from themselves that they have no idea of what they may want or need, and the notion of self-care is completely foreign. Additionally, even if we know self-care is good for us and can identify our needs, when times are tough one of the first things to get wiped from our budget and to-do list is self-care. “I don’t have time for that right now!” or “I don’t have any extra money to do things for myself,”are common reactions in the midst of life’s challenges.

Yet, taking time and care for ourselves during adversities can not only make them seem less stressful, it can help preserve our bodies, minds and spirits for a full and healthy life. Thankfully, self-care doesn’t have to cost much time or money at all, and with attention and loving kindness, it can simply become a way of life.
