River Of Waste – Are We Living in a Agricultural Chernobyl?
Even though going vegetarian or vegan is not a choice everyone can make, this doesn’t excuse us from remaining ignorant of what happens in especially brutal meat industry environments and the consequences, particularly the factory farm model. This is what the documentary River of Waste is all about. Here are the facts:
The meat industry has indeed changed much over the decades. What was once a small, family-owned industry has become a corporate event owned by just a few large companies. As with other corporate endeavors, the repercussions can be dire for large scale efforts. Aside from the horrendous treatment of animals stuffed into cages too small to turn around, being injected with hormones and antibiotics, and standing around in piles of their own waste, there are environmental consequences as well that need addressing. Though the meat industry has expanded to feed the hungry masses, the systems have not, incurring a huge problem of waste.
This is so much so that it has been nicknamed “agricultural Chernobyl,” with the potential for even more widespread destruction.
Where does it all go? Into the land and water surrounding the factory farms, where it seriously damages the ecosystem. It was once used as fertilizer for the land, but because of the chemicals used, method of removal and sheer quantity, it’s a dangerous situation, especially since the demand for meat is only increasing. Legally, companies are not responsible to remove the waste, only fueling the precariousness.
