You vs Others – Who is Taking Care of Who

You have to be taking care of yourself before you can take care of others

By Chessie Roberts

Our indoctrination into caring more about others starts when we are very young and follow us all of our lives. Share your toys, don’t push back, say only nice things, let others go in front, be patient with unthinking/unfeeling people and the list goes on. The question here is how can we possibly be this tolerant if we are not well cared for.

This attitude really kicks in in the work place. If you are ill, come in any way but don’t spread your germs! Your children require your attention, well just let someone else do it you should be working! It is your day off? Too bad, come in anyway! Again where does one draw the line?

We as humans require balance in all parts of our life. It is like the instructions on the plane, put the oxygen on YOU FIRST, THEN help someone else. I know that sounds selfish by the above standard, however, if you can’t breathe how can you do anyone else any good?

Take the time to figure out what YOU require to function well enough to give to others. Are you eating properly? Are you getting enough rest, enough quiet, enough spiritual time? Play time! Are you finding time to play? Truth is if you aren’t comfortable in the balance of these things, you are not able to assist others in any endeavor. It is ok to say no once in a while and time management is your friend. Some told me once about the 7Ps. Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss-Poor Performance. I have found this to be very true. By taking an hour or two to work out a schedule that allows for balance in your everyday life, you will be less stressed and better able to handle those events that pop up to knock you off track.

Get into a morning and evening routine. By having set plans for both the beginning and end of the day the middle sort of takes care of itself. Have a regular plan of events upon waking. Give yourself time in the washroom to get your person ready for the day without feeling rushed. If that means set your clock for an earlier time for rising, well then do that. Stay within your time allotment for doing what you have to do in the morning before you have to leave for the rest of your day. In the evenings lay out your wardrobe for the following day (especially if there are children to wrangle) have lunches packed, and schedules straight in everyone’s mind (such as who is collecting who from where and taking them to what event and where to meet) Decide what is an acceptable time frame for play both inside with electronics and outside in air, sun and active movement, no matter what your age, you need to move and relax.

I know, this takes time and effort but only for a little while. Once you make it a habit it will come as second nature. In taking care of you, then family, then friends and work you will find that life is better and a lot more enjoyable.
