Your latest book – Beyond the Utopian Ideal, discusses fantasies. Do you think that is another problem?
Gary Douglas: I think we live from the idea that if we think positively then everything will turn out positively. And that isn’t what occurs. It is about being aware of the choices you have available that perhaps you have never chosen before.
If you look at a person and say, “This is the ‘ideal’ man or woman for me.” Can you see what doesn’t work with them for you? You end up putting them on a pedestal then you try and make that the reality instead of looking at what is actually true. Most of us want to believe there is a perfect person for us but what is perfect? It is a judgment. It is not about what is perfect but what is going to make your life work and make it easier.
What would you like to see in the world?
Gary Douglas: I would like to see the world functioning from more consciousness. Then what would happen is we would have a place where we we’re not destroying the future and our possibilities in life. We would function from a place where we would contribute to it, so it could sustain itself. So much of what we do is destroying the earth, not creating it. We need to be stewards of the earth, not abusers. If we do this it will be around for our kids and grandkids and if we don’t it won’t. Every one of us can make a difference. Even to stop judging.
