Mind Over Matter
by Rev. Marcy Ellen
It used to really bother me when I would hear people say that they were “powerless” over something. That word never sat well with me for some reason, and now I know why. Perception creates our reality. If we believe that we are powerless over something, then we are, but the second we realize that our powerlessness is an illusion then our power is restored.
To believe that we are powerless is basically a declaration to the universe that we are disconnected from it. It says that the same amazing creative power that flows through everything in the universe somehow stops short and doesn’t flow through us. This just simply isn’t true. The mind is our most powerful attribute and, when it is acknowledged to be so, it can accomplish miraculous things.
An example of this occurred many years ago when I worked for a dermatologist. One day I had this rash on my arm and it wouldn’t stop itching. I told the dermatologist about it and he took a syringe and injected me with sugar water. He told me though that he injected me with a new medicine and that it only took a few minutes to begin working. Sure enough, within minutes the rash went away and I went about my day as usual. Around lunchtime I heard one of my co-workers laughing. When I asked her what was so funny, she told me that the doctor injected me with sugar water. Within minutes of hearing that news, the rash came back. My mind created the rash, healed the rash, and then recreated it upon hearing the news that I had been injected with a placebo.
We know the placebo effect is real. But there are cases that make it evident that our minds are creating our reality in our physical environment, which includes our physical bodies. Michael Talbot points out in The Holographic Universe that people with Multiple Personality Disorder have the ability to change their physical attributes upon the switching of their personalities. Upon the act of altering personalities, a whole range of things change in the person’s physical body. Burn marks, scars, and tumors can disappear altogether. Eye color and voice patterns change. Epilepsy and diabetes disappear and reappear. Allergies switch on and off. Some MPD females experience two to three different periods monthly. People with MPD often have different prescription eyeglasses due to the change in vision upon switching personalities. If one personality is drunk and then changes to a different personality they instantly become sober. The most intriguing thing about these phenomena is they are taking place instantaneously. The mind not only can change our physical environment, but it can do it at incredible speeds.
The mind is a very powerful tool but if we don’t see it as such or know how to utilize it, then it has no value to us and it can even hinder us. Imagine someone gives a homeless man a winning lottery ticket. Imagine the ticket is worth millions and the numbers are winning numbers. If the homeless man has never seen a lottery ticket and has no idea what it is or how to use it, then it’s just a piece of paper to him. Even worse, now he has this piece of paper that he deems as useless so he doesn’t understand why everyone around is doing everything they can to get ownership of that piece of paper. Everywhere he goes he gets pushed and shoved around until finally he runs into someone who teaches him about the lottery system. They take the time to show him how it works and even explain that his ticket is worth millions and all he needs to do is cash it in. The paper never changes. It is still the same piece of paper with the same numbers, but now the man has become empowered by his awareness about the paper.
The mind has always been powerful. The power has always been there. It doesn’t change, but our perception about it changes. The simplest act of gaining awareness of something can change our lives in miraculous ways. If we believe we have the power to do anything, then we do. If we believe that we don’t, then we don’t. Matter follows the mind, not the other way around. We have always been holding a winning lottery ticket. All we need to do is cash it in.
