Living Beyond Your Dreams

As a child, do you remember the dreams that you had for your life? Perhaps they were filled with wonder, adventure and creativity.  Growing up within the traditional school system in the mid-sixties, the occupational suggestions offered to young boys was fairly limited to a doctor, lawyer, accountant, architect, engineer, etc. Young girls might have been offered options beyond the traditional housewife as a nurse, secretary, dental hygienist, or clerk. Not to say that there weren’t exceptions, but this limited mindset largely prevailed in the United States until the late sixties began to shake up and question past traditional systems and gender roles.

At age eleven I can recall another occupation offered in my elementary classroom, the radical idea of being a fireman ignited my soul as it was the only out-of-the box option suggested. This unconventional occupation represented adventure, risk and the reward of potentially saving someone’s life. It certainly felt a lot more interesting than the previous titles. I could not have imagined living a life chained to the daily routine of the former options offered, so I was sure I’d be a fireman! At least I had found one career that I could muster up some sense of relationship with. The feasibility of being a musician, artist or therapist did not exist at that time in the limited deck of cards being offered. Once the scope of choices opened, I found my clan, my family, my place to land as an artist (in the clothes of a photographer).

What has been your dream beyond the limited choices you were offered in childhood? What sparked a flame within you at a young age that you disregarded due to the concern of “making a living?” What qualities, feelings and visions have been tapping you on the shoulder, waiting to be heard?

Every morning brings the opportunity to greet the new day with the childlike wonder that innately lives within each of us. Imagine awakening each day and truly believing that anything is possible. I invite you to journal at the start of each new morning allowing yourself to simply write down your train of thought while focused on unlimited possibilities. Do this for a week and see what themes show up repeatedly throughout the week. Remember, it’s not about mentally thinking, it’s an opportunity to release the mind from trying to figure things out and allowing a natural flow to spontaneously bring forward from the unconscious your deepest passions, dreams and gifts.

We are here to listen, honor and say yes to the talents and contributions that no one else can express as we can. Your unique imprint is essential and it is calling you now. As you open, listen and allow, you begin to discover that you’re being called to live beyond the realm of where you could have ever imagined yourself, beyond the dreams that you knew possible.
