Lisa Garr: Becoming Aware
OMTimes: What were the main contributing factors that supported you in your healing?
Lisa Garr: Wow! I learned of the power of my mind when I woke up in the hospital and the doctors asked me for my name. I realized that I couldn’t speak and that was a terrifying moment. I knew everything but it wouldn’t come out of my mouth. I felt the fear building up. It was such a major source of anxiety for me. It’s one of the reasons why I do a talk show because I am so grateful to be able to speak every day.
I found a doctor specializing in neuro-feedback who had created a new protocol that he was experimenting with – with kids with epilepsy and autism, and really healing these kids. His therapy has been so transformational for so many people. They put electrodes on your brain and your brain sends a feedback signal to the computer and it comes back in a reward system. My prefrontal cortex was damaged and as my brain started to entrain, it got into a coherent pattern. It’s an exchange of signals which then strengthen that cortex and build the neurons. That EEG process, over a year, was how I started to rebuild my language and my speech. I still struggle a bit with short term memory loss and my long term memory is like Swiss cheese.
OMTimes: For those who haven’t been involved in a serious bike accident and for those who will never experience a NDE, do you have some suggestions for raising our own level of consciousness. I am asking you this because when you’re with your back against the wall, you only have limited choices to make, but the average person always seems to find excuses not to change.
Lisa Garr: Yes, and this is where the practicality of it all comes in, because I am all about making it practical! You don’t have to go to the mountaintop and meditate, although it can be a great experience, but I like making visualizations that you can do several times a day, in several ways. This is what connects you to your consciousness.
