Clear Space = Clear Mind

Clear Space = Clear Mind

Doing the work I do, you can imagine there are times when I either need or want to see where my mind and thoughts are and where they are taking me, or how I am feeling about a certain situation or someone. As I am sitting here writing this, my office has slowly crept into the house, and without me noticing, mail has mysteriously started to cover my kitchen counters and dining room table. The piles of magazines seem to grow ever higher, and even the chairs in my bedroom are no longer for sitting, but more a dumping ground for clothes.

I am sure many of you reading this will easily empathize or say: “Sounds just like my house or my life!” When your home starts to become disorganized like this, it’s often a real sign of what’s really going on inside yourself and mind. It’s easy to see all the clutter everywhere around the house, but it’s far harder to be aware of a cluttered mind. So if this scenario is resonating with you, it’s quite likely that you have some work to do to clear out some clutter! Just remember that physical clutter is far easier to sort out than mental clutter, which can cause blockages and what I refer to as ‘energy stagnation’. This is when the flow of ‘chi’ (universal energy) becomes either blocked or literally is drained away. Chi is omnipresent in your life, your spiritual well-being, as well as your home, work place, and all areas of your life.

Finding that Clear Space…

When the clutter becomes too much, you can feel totally overwhelmed and everything just becomes too much. Things take a disproportionate amount of energy and you find yourself left feeling drained, lethargic, and in some cases depressed. It’s a wonderful feeling when you decide on a clear space and start clearing out the clutter. I am sure that you’ve been to friends’ houses, where you walk in and just feel such a positive vibe from their home. It’s all about energy, the art of ‘Feng Shui’ (space clearing). Everything flows in harmony, one space flows into another, the colors blend, the furniture is placed as though it’s meant to be there, and most importantly there’s a distinct lack of clutter. Office papers are where they should be, magazines don’t become roadblocks, and there’s a general sense of clear space for energy to flow.

Now, when I get to the stage where I feel that everything is getting in the way, that my home clutter is become overwhelming, then I know it’s time to start clearing up and having a major throw out. It’s actually quite cathartic, and while you’re clearing up your physical space of all that clutter, of course you’re clearing your mental space at the same time. You can almost feel a sense of clarity, as your mind puts things in order, and creates the space to think clearly, resolve problems and put balance and equilibrium back. You feel energized, and everything takes on a more vibrant feel again. Here’s the best part: When you clear clutter like this, it creates the clear space for new opportunities to present themselves.

Decide on Having Clear Space

I find I have to do a good clean up every few months. The last time I did a major de-clutter session, I created enough clear space in my life for four new opportunities to come to me. Totally unexpected, but welcomed opportunities all the same.

So just by saying to yourself: “I have to clean out or de-clutter my home or office,” you are acknowledging or feeling that it’s needed and way overdue. There are many books, articles, and resources if you’re interested in learning more about Feng Shui and the traditions and practices that go with it.

This article is a gentle, but firm nudge. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, drained, lacking in energy, or daunted by the mountain of clutter, then I want to encourage you to take a few baby steps and begin to simply clear out the clutter a little at a time. Once you start, it won’t be nearly so daunting or overwhelming, and you’ll be on your way! Learn to dispose of what’s no longer needed. It will not only change the energy from negative to positive around you, your home, and your office, but it could possibly change your life!

John’s Lesson

Don’t try and rebuild Rome in a day! Take it room-by-room, space-by-space. Tackle the area that’s causing you the most distress first. So if that’s your home/office space, let’s start there. As you begin, I want you to think about some of these questions about the rest of your home, and whether they pertain to you. The list is endless, but I hope some of these will encourage you, and the result will be clear space, a clearer mind, more energy, and you’ll start to reap the benefits and feel the difference.

Is there anything in your purse or handbag that you have been holding onto that is no longer needed?

Have you checked your spice rack lately? Are some of them old and out of date?

Is there anything in your medicine cabinet or bathroom that needs to be discarded?

Are there magazines that can be recycled or donated?

Are there old clothes that you no longer need or haven’t worn in quite some time?

Are there boxes or clutter as you walk in your front door?

These are just a few questions to get you on your way to a more vibrant clear space and life! You may begin to see other areas that could use a good clearing, and once you start, you can easily become quite good at it! Family and friends will not only notice the difference with your home or office, they will notice a positive change in you! No matter where you start, the important thing is that you begin!
