What are you passionate about?

I’m so lucky to have a job that I really enjoy. It is one that I’m passionate about, but most importantly, one that inspires me. Okay, I know it’s not your typical everyday job being a spiritual medium. But, in a way, there are aspects of my job that are all too similar to your more typical everyday job. I still have all the admin to attend to, the financial reporting, people to instruct, contracts to read, and day-to-day communications.

Yet, I know many people feel trapped in their job and as a result, have little passion for what they do. They look at it as humdrum and often say: “I just focus on 5 p.m. when I leave to go home!” I keep telling them that without any passion for what you do, you end up achieving average results and lose motivation and confidence to believe in yourself. When you have passion in your life as well as your job, then you can truly create amazing things, and achieve far more than you often believe is possible, as you become more productive, more inspired and successful.

Next time you’re waiting at the bank or the post office, or even shopping at the supermarket, have a look around. See if you can recognize a passionate person? I believe it’s easy to identify someone who’s passionate. They stand out a mile. They stride around with a sense of purpose and self-confidence. They have a look of contentment on their face. They return your stare rather than look away.

I know that all too often it’s not as simple as pressing a button to activate passion in your life. Sometimes, life itself gets in the way. Behavioral patterns and habits cause road hurdles, which can hold you back and it’s only when you confront them head on, that you can then move forward to put passion back into your life.

For example, if you find yourself endlessly making excuses, such as “I can’t do it” or “I’m not good enough” or “It will just be a waste of my time” … then try this affirmation instead:

I am totally in charge of my own thoughts and limitations – I am letting go of my excuses!

Equally, if you strive for perfectionism, it may be that you’re never going to get it totally right. But, if you lower the bar, just a tiny amount, you’ll realize that your best is really okay! You don’t have to worry about what others think, as ultimately they have their own issues to deal with.

If you’ve been reading all my Soul Inspirations over the years, I hope that you’ve learnt that with every step you take, you’re constantly growing. Learning to trust yourself more and more, and above all, that you don’t need to be afraid of what’s in the future; just embrace all the opportunities as they come.

John’s Lesson

Here’s a useful exercise to assist you in finding passion. Use your journal or a piece of paper to answer the following ten simple questions. Take as long as you need. Come on, don’t read on or skip these questions. Grab that pen and try this!

~ What am I passionate about?

~ What did I enjoy doing as a child?

~ What did I imagine at a young age that I wanted to be when I grew up?

~ Have other people noticed or commented on what I’m good at?

I try to practice and live my life according to Paramahansa Yogananda. So, I will leave you with one of his beautiful sayings, which has inspired me over the years:

“Life is to be lived. If you live abundantly and use all your talents and energies to the limit every day, you’ll develop ever-greater power and understanding of your full potential as a soul. There’s no end to the life, love, power, and wisdom that could be yours if you start using what you have.”
