Once in awhile, there’s a paradigm shift in science––a groundbreaking thinker appears whose ideas take accepted theory in unprecedented directions. Physicist David Bohm was such a thinker. In fact, His Holiness the Dalai Lama considered Bohm to be his “science guru.”

Raised during the Great Depression in a Pennsylvania coal-mining town, his childhood was rough. Misunderstood by his parents and peers, Bohm excelled academically, earning a scholarship to attend CalTech, where he caught the attention of Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer, impressed by Bohm’s keen intellect and out-of-the-box thinking, persuaded Bohm to do a PhD under his tutelage at Berkeley. But when Oppenheimer was recruited to oversee the Manhattan Project, he was forbidden to take Bohm because of the young man’s communist sympathies. In fact, Bohm later refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee; he was forced into exile and shunned by his peers.

That’s when Bohm turned to eastern mysticism for answers to the vexing questions that had long-plagued quantum theory. Exploring Eastern wisdom helped him develop groundbreaking insights into the profound interconnectedness of the Universe and our place within it.

INFINITE POTENTIAL takes us on a mystical and scientific journey into the nature of life and reality with David Bohm, the man Einstein called his “spiritual son”. A physicist and explorer of Consciousness, Bohm looked to Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti for inspiration, and to the Dalai Lama, who became a lifelong friend.

Attempting to probe the paradoxes at the intersection of science and spirituality, Bohm understood the need to look outside conventional wisdom which led him to explore the nature of Consciousness and human thought.

“We are internally related to everything, not externally related,” said Bohm.

“Consciousness is an internal relationship to the whole. We take in the whole and we act toward the whole and whatever we have taken in determines basically what we are.”

A new documentary Infinite Potential: The Life & Ideas of David Bohm tells the fascinating story of this little-known scientist and why his ideas were so threatening to the status quo.
