The Healing Power of Humor – No, That’s Not a Joke

What a gift it is to be able to laugh! To feel, see, hear and know the energy of joy. We have been finding ways to entertain each other since the birth of humankind. Although, as we’ve always heard, laughter is the best medicine, we all could use a little more of it right now.

A recent study published by The Mayo Clinic explains the short and long-term benefits of laughter. Laughter stimulates many organs with oxygen, increases endorphins in the brain, activates the stress relief response, soothes tension, improves our immune systems, relieves pain, and improves mood. In addition, laughter can increase heart rate and lower blood pressure. Other studies of laughter’s benefits reveal that it also improves sleep and enhances the effectiveness of T-cells in our body to help us combat illness.

Humor also has social benefits as it can bring people together. It can break the ice in tense situations, bring us new friends who laugh at the same jokes, and help others feel better. When we can laugh at ourselves, we bring in acceptance and forgiveness for our past miscalculations and mistakes. We can recognize our humanness together and share common ground. It is so healing to let go of the past with laughter and enhance our ability to cope.

Comedians share special energies with their audience when they cause many people to laugh at once. A comic knows how special a live audience is when everyone is laughing simultaneously. When we remember the good vibes we received when we laughed so hard we cried, we bring those energies back to life with beneficial results to our body, mind, and soul. Seeing a certain cartoon or a ridiculous movie can help us escape from our challenges, even for a short but very beneficial time. Humor works miracles in our moods.

We can lift ourselves out of depressive thoughts, anxiety, and fears with humor. Reading a book about ridiculous situations and scenarios can have incredible effects. Shakespeare and Mark Twain wrote about life in comedic terms. Situations when characters have somehow mixed up, have misunderstandings, blunders, and pratfalls. Silent films depicted all kinds of silly situations that made the audience laugh. Public speaking is a good place to experience the spontaneity of a good joke. It lifts the spirit of everyone in the room. Regardless of their reaction, the benefit is far-reaching. Thirty minutes watching a funny sitcom might assist us in elevating our mood much better than watching a two-hour murder mystery that creates anxiety. Many people love sarcasm and dark humor, while others like slapstick comedies, crazy videos, and funny memes. We all have our preferences when it comes to what makes us laugh.

There are also ways to improve our introspection of what is funny. Looking at certain situations with a dose of humor can help us rationalize when everything seems to be blowing up in our faces. We can make humor part of our stress relief package when dealing with challenges, adding a tool to our life- coping skills. With experience and maturity, we learn not to overreact, gather our thoughts, and look for the optimistic, lighter side.

Studies over the years have been proving the mind and body connection. We stay healthier, heal faster, learn better and enhance our spiritual awareness when we feel good. Our souls thrive on the positive feelings and outlooks we create and share with others. Humor allows us to open new doors, forge new friendships and find our light. We come alive inside when we can see the funny side of life on Earth. The healing power of humor is life-changing and lifesaving.
