Spiritual Illnesses and How to Deal with Them

Spiritual Illnesses

Many people are trying to get more spiritual today because our modern world has many problems that trouble our minds. Stress, sadness, and nervousness are why some folks seek spiritual guidance or get interested in different beliefs. Spiritual Illnesses represent a reality that cannot be ignored, especially in today’s times when we are aware of a higher warning pointing us to the urgent need to evaluate our moral conduct, our spiritual practices, developing actions and attitudes in line with the Law of love, justice, and charity.

But, if someone’s not ready or gets too self-focused, they might develop harmful diseases that can also spread to someone else’s spiritual side.

Navigating the Challenges of Spiritual Illnesses

The Origin of Spiritual Illnesses

The emergence of spiritual illnesses is linked to a broader view of health that recognizes the interconnection between body, mind, and spirit. Although it’s hard to pinpoint a specific time when spiritual diseases were first identified, various ancient cultures and traditions acknowledge the existence of these conditions.

Here are some examples of “Spiritual Illnesses.”

FAST-FOOD SPIRITUALITY

This disease’s name is like the fast food we eat – something quick and easy to fill a need but often not healthy or satisfying.

Consumerism can be considered the eighth deadly sin. Thus, consumerism is also an underlying cause of this “Fast-Food Spirituality.” It is, therefore, a limiting condition that prevents one from recognizing the fullness of true Spirituality, with its challenges and deep transformational teachings.

These folks think that Spirituality is a bit of wishful thinking. They believe there’s a quick fix for their problems. But one thing’s certain: true spiritual growth, which can make us feel better, doesn’t happen instantly or without effort.

FAKE SPIRITUALITY

Some people act like they’re spiritual and play a part in a play; they are called ‘role players”. They might dress up and work a certain way, even if they don’t truly believe in their actions. This is prevalent in a ‘new’ Spiritual movement called “Conspirituality”.

LIMITING BELIEFS

Negative beliefs about ourselves, life, and the spiritual world can create blockages and imbalances in our energy system. Limiting beliefs can prevent us from accessing our spiritual potential and living fully. Here are some examples of limiting beliefs:

“I am not worthy.”

“I am not good enough.”

“The world is a dangerous place.”

“I can’t change.”

“I don’t deserve to be happy.”

“I am not deserving of abundance.”

“I have no control over my life.”

“I can’t forgive.”

“I need to please everyone.”

“I don’t deserve love.”

By challenging these limiting beliefs and replacing them with empowering beliefs, we can make room for spiritual growth, emotional healing, and the manifestation of a more authentic and meaningful life.

SPIRITUAL DISCONECTION-MIXED-UP MOTIVES

This is a common problem. Even if someone really wants to grow spiritually, it’s easy to get confused with personal wishes, like wanting to feel special or unique, often because of feeling empty inside. The lack of a deep connection to one’s inner self, the absence of meaningful spiritual practices, or a feeling of spiritual emptiness can lead to the emergence of this spiritual illness. Here are some examples of spiritual disconnections:

  • Lack of purpose and meaning
  • Disinterest in spiritual practices
  • Feelings of loneliness and isolation
  • Feeling a lack of inner peace
  • Self-destructive behaviors

THE SPIRITUAL AND ENLIGHTENED EGO

A big, unchecked ego can cause many problems. When it gets mixed up with spiritual beliefs, it becomes a “Spiritual Ego.” This is when someone believes so strongly in their spiritual self-importance that it’s nearly impossible to help or advise them, blocking their spiritual growth.

“One of the most common illusions after awakening is the illusion of superiority. This is very common in spiritual circles. People can get trapped in a feeling of power, whether they are awakened or not; it’s a trap in the dream state, just as it is a trap when someone is transitioning from the non-permanent awakened state to the permanent awakened state. There is nothing more unpleasant than an enlightened ego. It’s an ego that thinks it’s enlightened, an ego that believes it’s awake, an ego that uses some of the energy and realization of awakening to build a new and superior sense of self.” (Adyashanti)

TOO MANY “SPIRITUAL TEACHERS”

A trend in Spirituality can cause problems for those who want to share real teachings. The issue is how fast these spreads, almost unstoppable, where someone learns a bit and suddenly thinks they’re an expert, ready to teach others. The Internet is filled with “Instant Gurus.’

SPIRITUAL PRIDE: HUBRIS

Hubris is like super pride that can get someone into big trouble, while arrogance is when someone thinks they’re better or smarter than they really are. Both make people seem full of themselves, and both are traits that display a lack of humility, but hubris can lead to bigger problems. This problem often happens to professionals or scholars who achieve something after much hard work. They become so proud of what they’ve done that they feel superior to others and stop being open to learning more.

HERD MENTALITY

Herd behavior occurs in animals in herds, packs, bird flocks, fish schools, and so on, as well as in humans. The “group mind” issue has troubled people for ages. It’s when a group of people start acting the same, from dressing alike to talking and behaving similarly. These unwritten rules make members feel they belong. But often, anyone different gets left out.

The Importance of Having a Healthy Spiritual Life

One of the main benefits of having a spiritual life is its connection to mental health. Spiritual matters help individuals understand their significance, making them feel valued and purposeful. Taking care of one’s spiritual side is essential for connecting with oneself and aligning goals with the upcoming cycles.
