Interview with Dr. Carmen Harra
OMTimes: How does Your Book “Plus One: The Numerology of Relationships” describe the role of numbers in our lives, according to the given text?
Carmen Harra: Numbers are the language of the universe; they are the medium through which Spirit speaks to us, encourages us, warns us, and reminds us of our higher nature. In the physical world, we use numbers every day, from phones to bank accounts, but what many of us don’t realize is that each of us was born with a unique set of numbers that contains divine DNA. Just as we have a genetic makeup, so too do we possess a spiritual composition that can reveal the full scope of our destiny. The role of numbers in our lives is to encompass our fate, and understanding our numerology can help us make the most of our free will.
OMTimes: Can you explain the “life path number” concept and its relationship significance?
Carmen Harra: Your numerological code was established on the day you took your first breath. It contains your life path number and other numbers of importance.
These numbers are responsible for your strengths, weaknesses, inclinations, and behaviors. They make up your archetype, a set of characteristics embedded in your subconscious. Your life path number steers you toward certain types of partners and dictates the decisions you make in relationships. If your life path number is 1, your archetype is Independent since this number is associated with autonomy and ambition. This means your personality is characterized by a strong sense of identity, a need to do things on your own, and a reluctance to give part of yourself to another person.
You can imagine some of these traits aren’t the most favorable to maintaining an enduring bond with another person. Plus, One teaches you how to mitigate tendencies that might be harmful to your relationship so that you can break out of the limitations of your life path number and archetype and achieve the commitment you want and deserve.
OMTimes: What unique perspective does “Plus One” offer in understanding the dynamics of past and present relationships through numerology?
Carmen Harra: Initial compatibility can be traced through numerology, but numbers also predict how a relationship will likely unfold in time. Plus, One can teach you how your numerology affects your past and present relationships. My book analyzes every combination of life path numbers on the basis of the seven kinds of relationships that exist. Understanding all sides to your life path number and your partner’s defines your dynamic and potential together.
OMTimes: How can the study of numerology help individuals understand their spiritual DNA, and what insights can it provide into their inherent tendencies, strengths, weaknesses, and talents?
Carmen Harra: The study of numerology can shed light on the full spectrum of a person’s character. A life path manifests a series of strengths, weaknesses, tendencies, talents, and more. It can guide a person toward making the most beneficial decisions for them, reveal the best time to make changes that will reap positive results, and help them understand how to overcome challenges to which they’re predisposed based on their numbers.
OMTimes: The Role of Free Will in Shaping Destiny: Considering the concept of a predetermined spiritual DNA outlined in numerology, how does free will interact with these predetermined elements?
Carmen Harra: When a soul chooses to reincarnate in the physical form, it signs a contract with the universe. This is spelled out through a person’s birthday or the day their Spirit chooses to reenter the world. You may amend your soul contract, but only to an extent: many of the events and situations inscribed within your birthday will find a way of manifesting. This is what your soul signed up for. It’s no coincidence that your Spirit picked a precise moment to enter this world. When you took your first breath, life surged through you and sealed your pact with the universe.
OMTimes: Can people significantly alter their life path through conscious decisions and actions, or are they largely following a pre-scripted destiny?
Carmen Harra: You were meant to be born at a certain time, in a certain part of the world, and into a certain family. For the most part, you will have to pass through the situations that were set up for you long before you reincarnated. These are your individual lessons to help you resolve your karma on Earth and liberate your soul. You also have free will, of course, so if you don’t like what your numerology says about you, you have every right to try to change it. Numerology empowers you to reach a thorough realization of your predestined course and the capacity of your volition.
OMTimes: In what ways does numerology suggest that specific life events, like relationship dynamics, health predispositions, and the timing of major life changes, are influenced by one’s birth date and associated numbers? How can understanding these influences empower individuals to make more informed decisions in their lives?
Carmen Harra: Like the tides of the ocean, time comes in cycles. There are cycles in which you should act and cycles in which you should wait; cycles in which you should plan and cycles in which you should build; cycles in which to begin things and cycles in which to end things. At any given moment, you are under the influence of numbers that are conducive to particular actions and not others. Numerology reveals the timing of our lives. Elements like pinnacles and personal years signal the potential to shift our circumstances. By being aware of our life cycles, we can work with them to bring about the transformations we want to achieve.
OMTimes: What is the significance of the “soul code” as described in the book, and how is it determined?
Carmen Harra: The sum of your birthday, month, and year constitutes your life path or soul code. It indicates your temperament and physical vulnerabilities. It can also unearth hidden talents and natural abilities you didn’t know you had. To calculate your soul code, start with your date of birth. Add your birth’s month, day, and year together, then reduce it to a single digit. For example, if you were born on January 16, 1984, you would add 1 + 1 + 6 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 4 = 30. You would then add 3 + 0, which equals a soul code of 3.
OMTimes: Carmen, please tell us how the concept of missing numbers from one’s soul code influences one’s life and personal growth.
Carmen Harra: Your soul code is composed of the numbers you have and missing numbers. We’re all missing some numbers from our code; no birthday contains every number from 1 through 9 because each one of us is passing through a process of evolution. The fact that your soul has chosen to reincarnate proves that you’re still undergoing the cycle of completion.
Missing numbers are sometimes more telling than existing numbers because they accentuate the lessons you must learn throughout life. It is extremely soul-satisfying to cultivate qualities you lack, to fill in the gaps left by missing numbers. You will find it immensely rewarding to work on independence if you’re missing a 1, introspection if you’re missing a 2, communication if you’re missing a 3, and so on. By examining both the numbers you have and the numbers you don’t, you can piece together a complete puzzle of your soul’s standing and the journey that awaits you on Earth.
OMTimes: Can you explain the relationship between numbers and planets in the context of Jewish Kabbalah and Greek numerology outlined in the chapter?
Carmen Harra: Jewish Kabbalah is a set of esoteric teachings that explains the relationship between the eternal God and the finite universe. The ancient Kabbalists acknowledged that numbers govern our emotions, karma, health, and, notably, our relationships. They recognized that every number is made up of a specific energy and associated each digit from 1 through 9 with a planet. Ancient Greeks, the inventors of Western numerology, also attributed numbers 1 through 9 to planets as they were understood then. This includes the Sun and moon, which the Greeks considered celestial objects.
OMTimes: How does the strength of a planet corresponding to a number in one’s soul code affect one’s life and efforts during different months of the year?
Carmen Harra: In astrology, every planet exerts a particular influence over us. On the basis of the movements of each planet through our solar system, during some months, one planet may have a more dominant energy than others. If the planet corresponding to the main number in your soul code is weak during a certain month, the universe will not support your efforts on that month. For example, if your life path is a 1, your energy is that of the Sun, and this means that warmer months, such as March, April, July, and August, are far more conducive months than months such as October, November, or December when the Sun’s impact on the Earth is weaker.
OMTimes: What are the four great pinnacles in numerology, and how do they relate to life stages and personal transformation?
Carmen Harra: The pinnacles are four stages of life summarized by major changes and mental shifts; they are fundamental turning points that offer you the opportunity to rearrange elements in your life. You may find yourself standing at a crossroads during the transition from one pinnacle to the next. Recognizing them can give you a glimpse into what lies ahead or what you’ve left unresolved and prepare you to fix what’s broken. In addition, each pinnacle is assigned a number from 1 to 9 on the basis of your birthday. The first and fourth pinnacles last 30 years, and the second and third pinnacles last about nine years. Each pinnacle epitomizes a unique form of transformation.
OMTimes: How do you describe the impact and significance of the four basic emotions – anger, fear, sorrow, and love – on our lives and decision-making processes?
Carmen Harra: Our four basic emotions impact our state of mind and day-to-day actions. The impact depends on which emotion we engage in daily since we become used to operating on certain emotions. Your brain is prepared to receive more “frustrated” nerve cells if you’re constantly frustrated. It anticipates daily emotions and produces corresponding nerve cells in preparation. This becomes a vicious cycle until you find yourself asking, “Since when did I become so frustrated over every little thing?” By then, the neural connections are already well formed and influencing your decisions. This is why it’s paramount to your relationships and well-being to explore your emotions and understand how they affect your life.
OMTimes: Can you explain the concept of how anger and hatred differ in their duration and impact on an individual’s psyche, as mentioned in the book?
Carmen Harra: Hatred and anger are sibling emotions. You’re angry at something, and vice versa when you hate something. But hatred lingers in our system much longer than anger does. Anger is characterized by a peak of the emotion followed by a crash. Conversely, hatred can dwell in the subconscious mind for many years, even a lifetime. You may not be angry with your friend anymore because she stole your boyfriend many years ago, but the hatred against her remains deep within you, and it can rear its ugly head at any moment. It is pivotal to heal yourself of both anger and hatred for no one’s sake but your own.
OMTimes: What role does love play in counteracting the negative effects of the other three emotions?
Carmen Harra: Love is your fourth great emotion, and it is the only emotion capable of conquering the other three. It is the feeling that possesses the most healing qualities. When we’re shown love, we are automatically soothed and relieved. Unconditional love never fails to pick us up, both emotionally and physically. Studies have demonstrated that a person in the hospital healing from an injury will heal significantly quicker if his loved ones are present versus if he is left to recover on his own. We should spread love to others despite what they may or may not feel for us. This is hard to do because we are often shown emotions other than love. But responding with love guarantees we heal our karma and vibrate as highly as possible for our life path.
OMTimes: How can emotions become addictive, particularly in the context of neurological patterns and brain chemistry?
Carmen Harra: Emotions can turn into addictions because of the chemistry of your brain. Within your brain exist nerve cells that are constantly reaching out to other nerve cells. Over time, these nerve cells establish an alliance. These mechanisms of the human brain hold true for any habit we adopt: the more we do something, the more our brain promotes that action. It gets used to anything, good or bad, sometimes supporting behaviors that are harmful to us. Our emotions, too, can become addictions, so much so that I believe they are the most undetected forms of addiction in today’s world. Only if we make mindful efforts to mitigate our feelings can we pacify their effects.
OMTimes: Can you elaborate on the concept of life paths, being particularly susceptible to certain emotional patterns or addictions, as discussed in the book?
Carmen Harra: Each of the nine life paths is susceptible to certain emotions. Because emotions radiate from the core of our being, they act as markers for life paths: they help distinguish different personalities from one another, lay out the inclinations of each, and set up predictable patterns of behavior. Every one of the nine numerology archetypes has dominant emotions that can hurt or help his relationships. For example, the Extrovert can hurt his relationships by being superficial, gullible, and dramatic. He can help his relationships by being self-aware, optimistic, and creative.
OMTimes: In what ways do you suggest that emotions, when they become addictions, impact our decision-making and overall behavior, and what are the implications for managing these emotional tendencies?
Carmen Harra: When we lose control over our emotions, they become addictions, dominating our thoughts and actions. We no longer operate from the seat of logic but from the same old emotions that have taken hold of us. These traits are conveyed by our emotions so that what we feel turns us into who we are. If you constantly feel and act on low or harmful emotions, you’ll erect unnecessary obstacles for yourself. More so, what you feel translates into how you feel. Your emotions are an indispensable factor in your overall health. Being emotionally burdened can beget illness and disease. To achieve health on all levels and function optimally, you must stabilize your thoughts and master your emotions.
OMTimes: How do you describe the concept of karma, and how does it differ from the common perception of karma as merely a form of “payback”?
Carmen Harra: Many people have a skewed perception of karma. While “payback” karma exists, the true nature of karma is much more encompassing and merciful than serving vengeance. Karma is not some malicious force that brings your bad deeds back to you; it is the first and foremost law of the universe. Karma is the reaction to every action, the memory of every one of your thoughts, intentions, and actions from this and prior lifetimes. More specifically, it is the memory of your soul, an imprint on your spiritual DNA that materializes throughout your life in the form of people you meet and things that happen to you. Your karma is attached to your being and belongs to you in the same way your physical features belong to you. Your karmic lessons are necessary to learn for soulful evolution and personal fulfillment.
OMTimes: Can you explain the significance of déjà vu in karma and past-life relationships, as outlined in the book?
Carmen Harra: When we share past-life karma with someone, we feel an instant attraction to the person. From the moment we meet him or her, we are filled with a deep-seated sense of familiarity. We may get flashes of our past lives or a strong impression of déjà vu, as if the moment has already occurred, perhaps in a different setting or a different time. Your soul recognizes the human experience as an opportunity to settle issues you may not have gotten to in your last life, and this includes people you knew in your former lifetimes.
OMTimes: According to your viewpoint, how does unresolved karma from past lives manifest in our current life and relationships?
Carmen Harra: Unresolved karma from past lives manifests in our current lives and relationships in patterns—repetitions that are often unwanted and keep us stuck in the same unhappy cycles. Many of the things—good or bad—that are happening to you are not new; they’re karmic episodes replaying from former lifetimes. Karma works in highly predictable ways: it carries over from prior incarnations, setting you up for the same scenarios.
OMTimes: What steps do you suggest for recognizing and resolving karmic patterns in our relationships?
Carmen Harra: Recognizing and resolving karmic patterns in our relationships is a multi-step process that starts with awareness of our karma and its origins. The first step to resolving karma is recognizing where, how, and why it started. Then, the work of resolving karma begins with identifying your own patterns and observing how they play out. After that, it takes vigilance to remain observant and make new decisions each time a similar situation arises, and an opportunity for changing habits presents itself. It’s especially difficult with the old issues that go back several lifetimes. Mastering karma is not easy, but it absolutely can be done.
