To Fur or Not to Fur – There is No Question

An OM Times Editorial Position Articulated by Shay Parker

As a conscious-living magazine, the staff at OM Times strives to emphasize the importance of ALL forms of life, not only the human race.  For many, domestic animals play a huge role in our daily lives.  They are our companions, our protectors, our service animals, our family members, and so much more.  When the average person thinks of a dog, cat, hamster, bunny, etc., it seems reasonable to expect these animals to be treated fairly and humanely, even if one does not have or want pets of their own.  The general moral consensus is that domesticated animals are widely accepted as having certain, albeit very limited “rights”.

We know as a society that domesticated animals are euthanized every single day by the millions, but what of the non-domesticated animals?  One of the main tragedies of mankind today is our treatment of animals, both our pets and those that continue to fight to have a place in this world.  Animals are treated as a commodity, plain and simple.  They are bred in the millions for money and then when they are of no more use to humans, they often end up in kill shelters, on the streets, or worse.

Now let’s consider the wild animals, those that are not domesticated for humankind to enjoy as pets.  Some examples include the raccoon, beaver, fox, wolf, mink, snake, alligator, seal and many others.  What many may not realize is that these innocent victims suffer right alongside their domesticated counterparts, all for the vanity of mankind.  The fur trade is one of the most cruel and heartless industries in existence today, yet it is a flourishing business.  Over 55 million animals are brutally killed every year for their fur, and this is often after being painfully trapped or inhumanely raised on a fur farm, only to die a horrific death.

We realize that this may not be a “pleasant” or “feel good” article to read, but if we are to truly promote conscious-living, then we must share the truth with our readers to promote awareness for the actions of mankind that are clearly unconscionable.  The fur trade definitely falls under this category.  Without going into further graphic detail, it is a fact that hunters and furriers cause immeasurable pain and suffering to millions of innocent animals…animals with spirits…animals with souls…animals that harm none and are only trying to survive, just as mankind is.

At OM Times, it is our utmost desire to serve this world for the betterment of all.  This is not exclusive to humanity.  We must, as a society, speak for those that cannot speak for themselves.  We must be their voice when they are treated with horrific cruelty.  We must honor them for the beings of life that they are.  The year is 2012.  Most societies in this world do not require animal skins for clothing or to shield them from the elements.  We certainly do not need their poor, dead bodies to be displayed atop our heads or around our necks, etc. for the sake of our own vanity.

We beg you to stand up and take notice of the horrible actions of the fur trade and do your part to put an end to this barbaric industry.
