Shift Your Perspective: On Discomfort
Are you comfortable in your discomfort? Have you found it easier to maintain your life in a way that perpetuates the need to complain, yet do nothing significant to address it?
Discomfort comes in many forms: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. The resulting pain is there to bring your attention to something that is not serving you and that requires closer inspection. Everything is connected; physical pain is exacerbated by mental, emotional, and spiritual distress. For example, depression and anxiety can intensify or present as physical pain, while physical pain can bring about depression and anxiety.
To clear the discomfort, the root cause must be addressed. It will persist until you spend some time considering the source. It may simply be a physical issue that only a doctor can treat; at the same time, there are underlying metaphysical associations for most illnesses. Once the spiritual, mental, or emotional issue is resolved, the physical pain subsides.
Alleviating the pain is most effective using a multi-level approach. Let’s say you are having heart palpitations and shortness of breath. The first level of treatment is physical, getting a check-up to ensure there is no actual heart anomaly. Once that is eliminated, consider when these symptoms occur. Is it emotional, primarily taking place during times of intense stress? Could it be an anxiety response to an external or internal trigger? Now move to your mental layer. Are your thoughts prompting the anxiety? Does fear, doubt, and worry creep in and trigger the anxiety? Now on the spiritual plane, do you believe that you are alone with your troubles or that you can release this pain trusting that the Universe is there to support you?
Simply addressing one aspect without consideration of the other three will perpetuate the discomfort and promote a sense that you are trying “everything,” but nothing is working. In this case, you may be trying every medical intervention available, but doing nothing to support and explore the other three layers of existence. The same goes for focusing only on the spiritual part and none of the others. Finding the root cause and making necessary changes to resolve it will create simultaneous changes on every level.
Additionally, centering on your overall vibrational level instead of one particular behavior gives you the power to simultaneously change all aspects of your life that need improving. The nature of the energy in your life either drives you toward positive activities that result in being motivated, inspired, and creative (high vibration) or moves you toward behaviors that diminish your energy such as smoking, overeating, or experiencing lack (low vibration). Changing the energies within and around you provides the power to change any condition in your life. By raising your overall vibration, you minimize or obliterate the lower vibrations.
Discomfort may arise as you seek to make changes in your life. Notice which part of the transition is causing you to resist. The distress is part of the lesson inherent in the effort to change. Coming into yourself and ultimately into your power is no easy task; there will be discomfort along the way. Persisting despite the discomfort helps develop willpower through controlling those negative thoughts. The will determines your next move, choice, and thought. It is your ability to control your emotions and impulses. It is what allows you to achieve self-control and self-discipline.
Discomfort is an indicator that something needs to change. Some choose to live with it, get used to it, and give up trying to change it. On some level, it is just not worth the effort it requires to surmount it. It is easier to keep functioning in the same patterns and deepening the thoughts, behaviors, and beliefs that triggered it to begin with. There is a comfort that turns to a habitual way of being. There is a deliberate choice being made to embrace this lifestyle.
That said, the other choice is to use that same discomfort to identify the things in your life that need to shift in order to live the life you truly want. Decide you want things to be different and then take appropriate steps to get you on track.
