Your Own Sacred Space
At one time or another we all need a break from the outside world, a place we can visit to quiet our minds, to renew our energy, and a place where we can commune with the heavens and our soul. Some prefer to go on a vacation or on a retreat; some prefer to go to a sacred location like a church, cathedral, synagogue or temple, or even the pyramids!
When I am feeling tense, disconnected, or when I need to meditate, I don’t need to always go to a location that’s far away, I can go to my own sacred space located right in my home, which is dedicated to my spiritual work. If you are lucky enough to have a whole room, that’s great, but if not, is there a corner or certain area within a room that you can dedicate to being your “sacred space?”
Some weeks ago I knew it was time to de-clutter my house once again! As I was walking from room to room, I noticed how my life was spilling into other rooms. Papers on the kitchen table, books unread here and there, clothes that were no longer needed in my closets, and cabinets that needed to be cleared. I wrote about this in a newsletter not too long ago, that clearing things out of your life and home will in fact create new space for positive things to enter into your life.
Even though I might have clutter in other parts of the house, I always honor my meditation room. The energy in that sacred space, no matter what the rest of the house looks like, never changes. I keep it uncluttered and clean, and still retreat there often, whether it’s for five minutes or an hour. When I’m in there, I can slip into a quiet place very quickly, because the energy of the room has been primed from hours and hours of meditating or doing spiritual work. It’s almost as if the energy has a memory that stays within the room.
Have you ever been inside a home or at a place where you could actually feel the energy? You may have felt nervous or irritated, or maybe it was a place that you couldn’t wait to leave. There may also be places where you feel calm, serene, and protected. It all depends on who or what conditions have been in that place and for how long. My home may have some clutter sometimes, but most people love the vibe of the house – just like I feel the vibe of my “sacred space.”
If this idea is resonating with you, then let’s find a room or space that you can set aside just for you! This room or dedicated space is going to be your place for meditation, studying, journaling, or just a place where you can take a spiritual break and connect with your soul. Most importantly, this should be a sacred space where you’re not disturbed when you need to retreat for your quiet time. Make sure you shut off the computer as the e-mail can wait, and unplug the phone, as you want total peace.
Try to make this special place clean and uncluttered, and you may even consider giving it a fresh coat of paint. It helps to have your sacred space be in a well-ventilated area, or near a window to let some fresh air in to renew the energy. A comfortable chair and a small table are really all that’s required. You may like to have fresh flowers or plants for added energy. Keep the lighting low, or even burn a votive candle or some incense. It’s even good to play some soft music or setup a personal alter if there’s enough space. These aren’t necessities, just suggestions.
In my meditation room, I have three colored hand drawings of my guides for inspiration, photos of special family members who have passed on, some mementos of spiritual leaders that I’m connected to, certain crystals that I resonate with, a few knick-knacks that were given to me as gifts, and of course my special comfortable chair. The room is painted in soft blues to create a tranquil atmosphere.
By creating your own special area and only using it as a sacred space for your quiet time, meditation, and personal development, you’ll slowly start to infuse the area with positive psychic energy, and it will take on its own feeling – one of warmth and peace.
John’s Lesson
When you find the space or room you want to dedicated to you, then you have to ask yourself: “What would make this room sacred to you?” Is the room or space dedicated just to you? Is it a place where you won’t wear shoes? Is anyone else allowed in or around the area? Is it a place where you will always honor yourself? Think about these questions, and set out the parameters of what will make it a sacred space for you.
Once you have your sacred space set up, honor it by performing a cleansing ritual. This can be anything you wish, from burning sage, to sending blessings to the four elements, to saying prayers, or blessing the room to align with your belief system.
When you enter your sacred space, it should make you feel comfortable, protected, hopeful, and inspired. Once you get into the practice of using this space for what it’s intended for, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do this a long time ago!
Feel free to use my ideas to help make your room special and sacred, or do whatever resonates with you. The important thing is that you keep it sacred, because your room is actually just an extension of you and your spirit!
Enjoy your new sacred space – you deserve it!
