How to Create from Our Soul

What does it mean to create from the soul and how we do it? First, we need to silence exterior and inner criticism, and then get our conscious ego out of the way. Through sitting in silence, we allow the subtle voice of the soul to speak and inspire us. Documenting the soul’s voice through journaling and art not only creates soulful masterpieces but teaches us about ourselves and the world.

We hear all the time to create from the soul. What exactly does that mean and how exactly do we know if it is our soul we are actually channeling? How do we create from the depth of our soul?

It starts with the desire to meet our soul and listen to its stories intertwined within our subconscious. Once we are ready to engage, the first steps are to cancel out exterior noise.

1. Dismiss Criticism

We live in a highly pragmatic society, and many are hyper-critical of what we create collectively. It seems everyone has an opinion, and may not be afraid to share it, especially when it is done anonymously on social media and over online reviews. At times criticism can be so harsh, it can genuinely break our spirit.

For artists of all genres, it is important to learn how to handle constructive criticism, but it’s even more important to dismiss what is destructive. Realize the only opinion that matters is our own, so put on our blinders and cancel out exterior negativity.

2. Silence the Inner Critic

Our inner critic is often more harmful than the public one, and the best way to silence it is to rebel against it. When we have a strong desire to create and our heart thrives on the passion of our inspiration, but our mind tells us we aren’t any good, it’s time to tell our mind to get lost and create anyway.

Again, it is a sign of our society, in which many are conditioned we have to be good…to be talented. Our culture has this annoying voice that tells us we must be qualified to create. However, realize the quality of the craft comes from practice. It comes from one-day creating near-masterpiece to a piece of garbage. Embrace each creation with the same artistic vigor and that will show the mind the heart and soul mean business.

3. Get out of the Way

Once outer and inner criticism has been silenced, it is time to tell our pragmatic mind to get lost. Often, we have an idea of what we want to create. We have plotted it in our heads, created various sketches, and drafted a multitude of outlines. We have it all planned and then the output feels too stale, stiff, and dreadfully boring. What happened? We had so carefully thought of our creation.

Conscious thought has no place in soulful creations. When we become so attached to what we want to create and fail to feel it, we lose passion for the subject. Here is where we have to let go and detach from our creation.

4. Create without Expectation

There can be a lot of anxiety facing the blank page – whether canvas or blank computer screen. It is even more intimidating when we have no ideas about what to create, especially if we are a highly pragmatic and practiced planner. The soul, however, doesn’t respond in an organized fashion. It is loose and fluid, so to truly create through the soul, we have to let go of all our thoughtfully laid out plans.

5. Trigger the Muse Within

There is no one way to free our souls. For each of us, the voice of the soul speaks differently. Some hear it in the silence of meditation or the melody of music and others in the whispers of the wind. The more we embrace silence in this chaotic, noisy world, the more we can hear the lives of those trying to reach and teach us.

6. Documenting the Soul’s Inspiration

While listening in silence gives rise to the voices of our soul, documenting through journaling, painting or collage where we can study their messages and see how they pertain to our daily lives. In freewriting and painting, we create a blueprint of the soul.

7. Let Go

Once we let go, we become so lost in the process that BOOM that story writes itself, the muse paints itself. We are just a bystander. It didn’t come with conscious thought or pragmatic planning. Their messages can tell us the reasons for our fear and triggers and mostly release burdens to free us to our next life adventure.
