On June 22nd, U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary, announced the federal government will investigate its past oversight of Native American boarding schools and work to “uncover the truth about the loss of human life and the lasting consequences” of policies that over the decades forced hundreds of thousands of children from their families and communities. The recent discovery of children’s remains buried at the site of what was once Canada’s largest Indigenous residential school has magnified interest in the troubling legacy both in Canada and the United States. How may this generational trauma be addressed? Is there room for collective healing and forgiveness?
My guest this week on Vox Novus, Randy Kritkausky, shares his personal quest to go beyond the media reports, find the truth, and work toward healing. Randy, author of the book Without Reservation: Awakening to Native American Spirituality and the Ways of Our Ancestors, is a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and his book detailed the powerful story of spiritual awakening, reconnection with Nature, and rekindling of ancestral wisdom. He joins me this week to discuss the truth of what happened at these “Indian Residential Schools,” the continuing trauma of indigenous peoples and how all of us may come together to heal these wounds.
