Does Your Compassion Have Boundaries?

Have you ever considered that your compassion needs boundaries?

We may aspire to deepen our compassion. But compassion must also be balanced by boundaries.

You see, our compassion is like water in a well. Our supply of compassion must be replenished, or we drain the well, and have nothing left for anyone, including ourselves.

We can easily empty the well by extending our compassion too much in the direction of one person or too many people in a short period of time.

Compassion boundaries help us in many ways:

· They help us to recognize how much we can extend ourselves at any time.

· They show us where we are getting hurt in extending compassion to others.

· They remind us to also have compassion for ourselves.

· And they let us know when we must stop and replenish ourselves.

Compassion boundaries are essential yet fluid. Sometimes we can stretch ourselves more than at other times.

We must learn to discern what compassion boundaries are healthy for us and become protective of those boundaries. We must also develop the habit of regularly refilling our well of compassion.
